Omschrijving
Wiebenga in Nieuw-zakelijke stijl in 1927-'29.

Description
Eight-storey APARTMENT BUILDING, flat-roofed and constructed using a reinforced concrete structure - with recessed windows with steel frames and concrete sills - on an almost square floor plan, whereby through subtle variations the composition is not completely symmetrical on all sides, yet always contains a layout mirrored along an axis running through the middle of the verandas in the centre of the facade, which is further marked by frosted-glass screens, designed by J. Duiker and J.G. Wiebenga in New Objectivity style in 1927-'29.
The building rests on a basement storey protruding approximately halfway above ground, of which the SW and NE sides are each expanded by one bay over the full depth and which is surrounded by regularly coupled horizontal windows with frosted-glass panes for the illumination of spaces arranged as a car park and storage, and is accessible on the SE side via a staircase concealed behind a parapet.
The main entrance situated on the Benoordenhoutseweg - in the centre of the facade - is reached via a quarter-circle staircase on the south corner which leads along an open gallery marked by a parapet with steel railings towards the semicircular projecting platform to which the entrance porch, also crowned by a semicircular canopy, is situated. The piano nobile contains on either side of the central stairs and lift hall office and residential spaces, with a series of doors to both basement levels arranged in the middle of the SW and NE facades, as well as at the corner, and furthermore three large windows of unequal size with fanlights are placed between these doors; on the SE side a narrow window fills both corners to which a large window divided into three unequal parts adjoins, the fanlight of which transitions into a horizontal window strip divided into five unequal parts, which motif is repeated in reduced form on either side of the entrance section; the NW side also contains a central entrance section, albeit without a platform and canopy, but marked by wall piers with curved profile; this is otherwise identical to the SE facade.
The five residential storeys above follow essentially the same window scheme as the piano nobile, with the main differences being the placement of verandas in the centre whereby on the NW and SE sides - in contrast to the narrower verandas on the SW and NE sides - over the full height a five-pane-wide glass wall per apartment is installed for the illumination of the directly adjoining central stairwells, as well as the angled placement of the balcony doors on the thereby bevelled corners, leading to a minuscule balcony of which the underside of the parapet furnished with steel railings is extended further downward on the SE and NW sides than on the NW and SE sides, in accordance with the wider and narrower intermediate sections of each storey at floor level height; furthermore on the west corner per storey a balcony projecting two bays outward from the building is installed, whereby the balcony of the lowest residential storey appears to be merged with the room situated beneath it which has a window on the NE side and a door on the SW side and which is furthermore supported by an open construction of a flat concrete column and beam from ground; at the lowest residential storey the sides of the central veranda on the NW side are moreover bevelled. The upper structure - recessed in relation to the remaining residential storeys and thereby separated by an overhanging canopy - in which two very large apartments are accommodated, is furnished all around with a steel railing of lattice form; the walls of this upper structure consist almost entirely of glass, alternating two windows and two doors, separated by concrete wall piers; here too an overhanging concrete canopy is installed, but at two-thirds of the total height; on the SE and NW sides furthermore two concrete lifting pillars are installed of which the transverse lifting beams connect to the concrete moulding extending above the canopy, while on the SW and NE sides two chimneys are each placed in line with the concrete wall piers between the large windows on the roof still the cube-shaped lift shaft housing projects in the centre, against which advertising could be placed at the time.
Apartment building of characteristically New Objectivity architecture due to the conscious use of reinforced concrete, steel and glass as building material without any decoration and due to the demonstration of the non-load-bearing character of the facades through the application of angled balcony doors at the corners and of verandas in the centre, as well as through the attention to a practical floor plan - thereby enabling households without domestic servants - and to the overall functional layout of the building - with central facilities such as heating, lift, storage, and the regularly mirrored grouping of apartments around a central lift and two central stairwells - as well as to maximum admission of light and air; furthermore the first executed attempt - albeit as a reduced result of a plan originally comprising five building blocks connected by means of galleries - to provide a new urban planning and typological solution through high-rise construction for the housing problem and furthermore the first housing construction project of major pioneering significance realised in the private sector.
