Omschrijving

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. Park layout on a rectangular plan walled on three sides at different levels, which originally dates from the end of the 18th century. After construction of the house was commenced in 1791, Johann Arnold Clermont was granted permission in 1793 to have trees planted along the road from Vaals to the 'Nieuw Huys' called 'Blumenthal'. This road concerns the south-eastern half of the cross-axis of the Blumenthal layout, the present-day Bloemendalstraat (now without avenue planting), as can be seen on the Tranchot map (1803 et seq.). This map shows for the first time the formal layout of Blumenthal, with two rectangular water parterres and a rectangular ditch on either side of the main axis. This ditch, which was located at the front of the park and ran parallel to the Bloemendalstraat, was filled in around 1850 or in the second half of the 19th century (the ditch is still shown on the Topographic and Military map from c. 1850). Of this ditch the curved bank profile on either side of the former bridge over this ditch is still visible in the terrain. At the time the ditch was filled in, the remaining water parterres were probably also filled up, which were located directly across the width-axis of the two ditch halves. Two water parterres were located on either side of the side facades of the house. The two other water parterres were situated at the highest level of the layout.
The two water parterres behind the house formed part of a terraced layout on two levels, which has been completely preserved. On the main axis at the rear of the house the levels are spanned by two monumental flights of steps with stairs, retaining walls, balustrades, fountain and wrought-iron gate, which were probably designed by the architect Joseph Moretti at the end of the 18th century; this architect probably also designed the formal park layout.
Between both flights of steps the boundary of a formal or neo-formal parterre has been preserved. This boundary runs from the lowest flight of steps via two concavely curved lines parallel alongside the main axis to the highest flight of steps (in the part of the Illustrated Description of the Dutch Monuments of History and Art; South Limburg Vaals, Wittem and Slenaken, this boundary is depicted in a different manner).
The end point of the formal layout at the rear bounded by a wall is marked by 19th-century elms, which are planted in a row on either side of the main axis.
As such, the park layout of Blumenthal forms one of the few parks, if not the only park in the Netherlands, with an original formal terraced layout, of which the architectural decorative components have been largely preserved.
In the first half of the 19th century a landscape-style park was laid out at Blumenthal, which largely concentrates on the front of the house. This layout, which consists of a pattern of walking paths laid out in flowing lines around a circular drive, is still partially preserved and is decorated and divided by various tree groups and specimen trees (beech, plane, chestnut). Along the edges there are now parking spaces, which were laid out in connection with the present use of Blumenthal as a hotel and which are of secondary importance to the historic layout. At the rear of the park layout these changes in the first half of the 19th century remained limited to the planting of specimen trees (beech, oak, ash, plane).
Around 1848 a convent with boarding school of the Dames du Sacre Coeur was established at Blumenthal. Then the terrain was walled on three sides. Probably at that time between the said row of elms and the rear wall, over almost the full width of the layout, a narrow, low and elongated flight of steps was raised, which still exists as an elevated walking path.
In the second half of the 19th century a drive was laid out on the main axis, the Sjwats Jris, (now planted with a row of linden trees on either side), which extends from the cross-axis of the layout (Bloemendalstraat) to the Maastrichterlaan. Furthermore, in the second half of the 19th century, when the main building was extended among other things in the south-eastern direction, a landscape-style park layout was also realized on this side (now public park); currently there is no historically valuable relationship to be discovered between this public park and the Blumenthal layout. In the beginning of the 20th century the tennis court was laid out in the SE corner of the layout.
