Inleiding.
Voormalig Diaconie weeshuis uit 1867, gebouwd in een sobere eclectische baksteenarchitectuur naar ontwerp uit 1862 van de architect E. Saraber, in opdracht van de Nederduitsche Hervormde Gemeente. Verbouwd in 1925-1926 door de architect G. van Hoogevest. Het weeshuis hield zijn oorspronkelijke functie tot 1942. In 1991-1992 is het, met behoud van het de oorspronkelijke structuur, verbouwd tot appartementencomplex.
Omschrijving.
Voormalig weeshuis, bestaande uit drie vleugels op U-vormige plattegrond. Het gebouw telt twee bouwlagen, deels onder zinken kappen. De bouwlagen worden door een geprofileerde cordonlijst van elkaar gescheiden. De voorgevel is aan de Hooftskade gesitueerd. De vleugel langs de Koningstraat, oorspronkelijk van gelijke lengte als de tegenovergelegen vleugel, is in 1925-1926 aanmerkelijk ingekort. De voorgevel bezit een naar voren springend middenpaviljoen en twee eveneens naar voren springende zijpaviljoens die worden bekroond door deels bakstenen frontons met oculi. Het middenpaviljoen heeft een attiekverdieping. Het gebouw bezit een hardstenen plint en bakstenen gevels, met uitzondering van de gepleisterde middenas van het middenpaviljoen. Hierin bevindt zich de getoogde ingangspoort en daarboven een venster met fronton op consoles. De vensters zijn vijftienruitsschuifvensters. Van de gevel aan de kant van de Koningstraat zijn de beide uiteinden en het middendeel als risaliet uitgebouwd; de uiteinden worden bekroond door frontons, voorzien van glas. Het hoofdtrappehuis in het middenpaviljoen aan de Hooftskade bezit een dubbele bordestrap, tegelvloer en lambriseringen van geglazuurde baksteen uit de bouwtijd. De vensters met glas-in-lood die de lichtinval vanaf de achterzijde verzorgen dateren van de verbouwing uit 1925-1926. Het terrein wordt aan de kant van de Hooftskade afgesloten door een gietijzeren hekwerk.
Waardering.
Gebouw van architectuurhistorisch waarde als voorbeeld van de sobere eclectische baksteenarchitectuur; typologisch waardevol als laatst overgebleven en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een voormalig weeshuis in Den Haag. Cultuurhistorisch van belang als voorbeeld van kerkelijke liefdadigheidsarchitectuur uit het derde kwart van de 19e eeuw. Description.
Former orphanage, consisting of three wings on a U-shaped plan. The building has two storeys, partly under zinc roofs. The storeys are separated from each other by a moulded string course. The front facade is situated on the Hooftskade. The wing along the Koningstraat, originally of equal length to the opposite wing, was considerably shortened in 1925-1926. The front facade has a projecting central pavilion and two similarly projecting side pavilions which are crowned by partly brick pediments with oculi. The central pavilion has an attic storey. The building has a stone plinth and brick facades, with the exception of the rendered central axis of the central pavilion. This contains the arched entrance portal and above it a window with pediment on consoles. The windows are fifteen-pane sash windows. Of the facade on the Koningstraat side both ends and the central part are built out as risalits; the ends are crowned by pediments fitted with glass. The main staircase in the central pavilion on the Hooftskade has a double flight of steps, tiled floor and panelling of glazed brick from the building period. The windows with leaded glass which provide light from the rear date from the alteration of 1925-1926. The site is closed off on the Hooftskade side by a cast-iron fence.
Evaluation.
Building of architectural-historical value as an example of sober eclectic brick architecture; typologically valuable as the last surviving and well-preserved example of a former orphanage in The Hague. Of cultural-historical importance as an example of ecclesiastical charitable architecture from the third quarter of the 19th century. An added value is the important urban planning situation on the outside of the canal ring.
