Inleiding.

Introduction.

Detached apartment building "Duinwyck" surrounded by greenery, in the style of the Nieuwe Haagse School. The building dates from 1929-1932 and was designed by ir. L.M. van den Berg and J.J. Groenema.

Description.

The apartment building "Duinwyck" has a U-shaped floor plan and consists of a basement and five storeys, the uppermost of which is set back, under a flat roof. The building, constructed largely in yellow brick, stylistically belongs to the Nieuwe Haagse School. Characteristic is the somewhat cubistic treatment with plastically formed corner sections and risalits. The continuous gallery with masonry parapet for the set-back fifth storey gives the facades a pronounced termination, the strongly horizontal effect of which is further accentuated by the parapet and the projecting canopy with cordon moulding. Substantial vertical elements are formed by the risalits and the corner sections with their profiled corners, as well as the tower-like building body against the left corner section of the front facade, which is crowned by a square lantern with rustication in brick on the corners and semicircular-shaped "sound holes". The front facade on the Van Alkemadelaan has continuous balconies per storey with masonry parapets; the side facades are provided with smaller or inset balconies. On the front and side facades, the ground storey between the corner sections is built out, whereby the continuous balconies of the first storey take on the character of landings. The main entrance in the front facade, with granite entrance steps, is flanked by triangularly built-out porter's lodges and roofed over by a concrete canopy. Approximately in the middle of the long side wings are rectangular entrance gates with passages in which accesses to the long corridors in the axis of the wings are situated on either side. The broad and narrow windows originally all had steel frames, many of which have now been replaced by aluminium frames. Most of the doors date from the construction period: the main entrance has wooden doors with glass panels, the doors in and before the passages are of steel. On the side of the Ruychrocklaan, the doors that close off the entrance have been modernised. The facades facing the inner courtyard show the same plastic treatment as the outer facades with projecting sections, loggias and inset balconies. The rear facade of the front wing has a broad central risalit in which the window section of the main stairwell. Against the ground storey of the side wings, garages have been built on the inner courtyard, above which are galleries. The originally open rear side of the inner courtyard has likewise been closed in in later times with garages. Between the two passages, a steel canopy with plastic covering has been built in recent times. Internally, the three wings have long corridors in the middle of each storey, with apartments on either side. In the central part of the front wing and in the side wings are stairwells situated with elegantly curved wooden stairs with wooden railings and some decoration in Art Deco style. In front of the three outer facades of the apartment building are green strips with landings for the garden doors of the ground-floor dwellings. The green strips are separated from the street by garden walls built in yellow brick that also contain plant boxes and at some places iron entrance gates. In the original layout, the building, which has a total volume of 57,000 m3, contained 68 rental apartments and numerous central facilities, such as a cafe-restaurant with reception rooms, a reading room, a laundry, a shop and garages with car service.

Valuation.

Apartment building of architectural-historical importance as a well-preserved example of the Nieuwe Haagse School in its main form, detailing and material use. Culturally and typologically, it is valuable as a grand and luxurious example of the type of apartment buildings that were realised extensively in The Hague in the nineteen twenties and thirties. The building derives added value from its urban planning setting on the broad Van Alkemadelaan.
