Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Office building, built in 1917 after a design by architect Eduard Cuypers in traditionalist style, inspired by early 17th-century Northern Dutch renaissance. In front of the building, which is incorporated into the street frontage with continuous development, is an iron fence with square bollards. Description.
The building, constructed largely in brick, consists of basement, three storeys and roof truss storey in the gabled roof. The width comprises five window bays, of which the right one contains the entrance section. The basement is clad with sandstone and shows beneath the windows reliefs with leaf motifs in contemporary design. Natural stone is further applied for the decorative details, ornamental bands and the blocks applied around the windows of the piano nobile. All windows possess natural stone cross windows. The windows of the piano nobile have principal lintels; the windows of the first storey possess relieving arches with blocks, resting on wall piers and decorated with carved mask keystones and brick mosaic in the arch rings. The windows of this storey possess blind balustrades. The cornice of the facade carries a natural stone balustrade and is corniced above the wall piers between the upper windows. The entrance section with steps and portico is accentuated by two free-standing Ionic columns in natural stone on sandstone base. They carry a principal lintel and balcony with balustrade, flanked by heraldic lions. The carved doors are set in an arched frame with fanlight. The facade further possesses ornamental wall anchors between the relieving arches of the first storey. In the roof are three brick roof dormers with two-light windows and pediments. The interior comprises, among other things, a large hall with staircase, panelling, stair rail with newel post and an internal shop front with leaded glass, as well as a beam ceiling on consoles, all from the time of construction and provided with carved decoration in contemporary forms. The rooms of the piano nobile possess stucco ceilings. In recent times a modest adaptation of the interior has taken place, whereby among other things a counter wall was installed in the hall. Appraisal.
The building is of architectural-historical importance as a characteristic example of the traditionalist direction in architecture of the first quarter of the 20th century, whereby reference was made to early 17th-century Northern Dutch renaissance. Principal form, detailing and the applied material are intact. It also has important ensemble value as a harmonious component of the historically valuable facade row on the Korte Vijverberg.
