Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Former office from 1920-1924 of the Nederlandsche Handelsmaatschappij on the corner of the Kneuterdijk and Lange Vijverberg, built in the style inspired by 17th-century North Dutch Renaissance according to the design of architects J. and M.A. van Nieukerken. The current purpose of the property is a branch of the Algemene Bank Nederland. Description.
The brick-built building on a rectangular ground plan consists of a basement, three storeys and a high, continuous hipped roof, covered with slates and crowned by square chimneys. The width of the facade on the Kneuterdijk is nine window bays; the width of the facade on the Lange Vijverberg is thirteen window bays. Both facades possess broad central risalites with above the cornice atttic-form, broad roof dormers, covered by pediments with cartouches. In the roof are wooden roof dormers with cross windows and pediments. The storeys are separated by moulded natural stone drip mouldings; natural stone is also applied for the window lintels, the framing of the main entrance, the broad balcony against the facade on the Lange Vijverberg and the sculptured components. All windows possess relieving arches and cross windows; above the three-part central window of the first floor is a sculptured coat of arms with female figures. The main entrance shows pilasters and an arch framing in rusticated work, a sculptured Hermes head serves as keystone and the crowning pediment possesses a sculptural filling. The broad balcony on the first floor of the central risalite in the facade on the Lange Vijverberg possesses a sculptured balustrade and is supported by natural stone consoles. The facades further contain ornamental wall anchors. The interior contains among other things a vestibule with stairs, an imposing banking hall which is preceded by an antechamber from which the staircase can be reached on the left, all executed in marble and precious wood in neo-Louis XIV style. The great banking hall originally possessed a high void which was filled in during renovation in the 1970s. The floors of the antechamber, banking hall and staircase are executed in marble; this material is also applied to the lower parts of the pillars and columns with their Corinthian capitals around the banking hall. The walls are plastered white and the stucco shows neo-Louis XIV forms. The staircase also possesses plastered walls and stucco decoration in this style, which was also used for the baluster rail of the stairs. Evaluation.
The property is architecturally significant as a characteristic example of representative-historicising style derived from North Dutch Renaissance, as the Van Nieukerken brothers applied it into the 1920s. The property gains cultural-historical value from the fact that the main office of the Nederlandsche Handelsmaatschappij was located here. An added value is the striking urban planning situation on the corner of the Kneuterdijk and Lange Vijverberg.
