The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The building of the "sociëteit de Vereeniging" was founded two years after the establishment of the society in 1853, and was created in its present form in the first half of the 1870s in eclectic style with predominantly Renaissance-inspired stylistic motifs. The architect was presumably Eli Saraber. The property is incorporated into the street frontage with continuous built development. NB. The cadastral plot includes a five-window-bay-wide 19th-century corner property and a lengthened late 19th-century building block at right angles to it, extending to the church of St. Jacobus de Meerdere. This corner property and the rear building block are not subject to protection. Description.

The brick-built, rectangular building consists of two storeys with a hipped roof currently covered with shingles. The property has five window bays, of which the second from the right has a particular accent as the entrance bay. The plinth of the cornice-topped facade is clad in ashlar. Against the ground floor between the rectangular windows are pilasters with an ashlar base, which above their undecorated capitals possess rectangular panels with foliage. The two storeys are separated by a moulded list; above this the bays to the left of the entrance axis are furnished with round-arched windows with keystones adorned with mask heads. The first floor is articulated by double brick pilasters with broad Ionic capitals. The main cornice of the facade consists of a broad frieze decorated with foliage and cartouches, and the cornice moulded above the pilasters. Above the entrance door with fanlight is situated on the first floor a tablet with an inscription concerning the founding of the society. The tablet decorated with ears of corn and foliage bears a pediment with acroterion. The entrance bay is raised higher and is crowned by a curved pediment with moulded list. The windows in the ground floor to the left of the entrance possess T-frames. Internally, the high society hall from the period of construction has been preserved, whose walls articulated by pilasters and the coffered ceiling are furnished with ornamental and figurative paintings. Noteworthy are the representations oriented towards Pompeian stylistic features. A conservatory against the rear facade is connected to the hall by means of three round-arched openings and possesses a simple stucco ceiling, wooden wall panelling and leaded glass fanlights. The hall behind the main entrance possesses polychrome paintings along the walls. Evaluation.

The society building is architecturally significant as a characteristic example of the late eclectic building style, in which predominantly Renaissance motifs have been applied. Typologically and culturally, the property is of value as a well-preserved example of a 19th-century society building.
