Omschrijving

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. From the historic layout of Kasteel Amstenrade, several elements still recall the situation at the end of the 18th century, when the present house was erected. Bordering the mirror arch-shaped south side of the forecourt lies a section of what is now a dry moat (now partly overgrown with trees), which runs from the corner of Hoofdstraat - Hagendorenweg to the south corner of the kitchen garden walls located on the Hagendorenweg. The moat was fed via a water pump in the still existing pump house in the park at the drive at the three-way junction of Hommerter allee - Hoofdstraat. Perpendicular to the front facade, the former sight line and drive access was also laid out at that time, should it not have existed previously. This axis has only been preserved as a trace. From this period probably also dates the other former drive access lying on the SW side, which has likewise been preserved as a trace; this trace coincides with the Hommerter-allee. The park layout of Kasteel Amstenrade is mainly based on a design from circa 1815 by the German garden architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe (1775-1846). Around 1808, the Liège architect G. Duckers made a design for the layout of Amstenrade, of which it is not known to what extent it was executed. The main motif in the park designed by Weyhe is a pair of sight lines, which extend from the north side of the main wing of the house over a park meadow in northerly and north-easterly directions. The north-easterly sight line is also indicated on Duckers' design. With regard to the castle located in the south corner of the park, the sight lines are laid out in such a way that they cover as great a length as possible for optimal perspective effect within the space of the layout. An important feature of the park at Amstenrade is furthermore the rising gradient of the terrain in a northerly direction, which provides the aforementioned sight line motif with additional dramatic effect. At the endpoint of the northern sight line, a rustic grotto was built around 1815, which has great compositional value as a point de vue. The endpoint of the north-easterly sight line is now marked by a Kentucky coffeetree (Gymmocladus dioicus), which was planted at the beginning of this century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, a walk in landscape style was laid out around the park, which runs in curves and which at the northern endpoints of the sight lines offers views of the castle situated in the valley. Furthermore, the walk on the north side of the park offers a view of the rear of the orangery, which at this location evokes strong associations with a classical temple. A winding path runs transversely across both sight lines, which originates at the height of the orangery and leads in a westerly direction. Halfway along this path is a dilapidated wooden structure, which is of minor significance for protection. The park meadows, over which the sight lines run, are separated from one another by solitaires, groups of trees and wooded areas, and are bordered by woodland in irregular curves. Halfway along the aforementioned path a group of trees with oak and beech and plane (19th and 20th centuries). On the north side of the park, between both sight lines an oak and beech wood (19th and 20th centuries) with various ornamental trees along the edges, including cedar of Lebanon, handkerchief tree, tulip tree, American and summer oak, horse chestnut, ash, wingnut and Dutch lime (19th and 20th centuries). Around the park a woodland edge with oak and beech, plane, cedar, red horse chestnut, Dutch lime, white maple, ash (19th and 20th centuries) with ornamental trees planted as solitaires and in groups along the edge of the park meadows including beech, Dutch lime, horse chestnut, tulip tree, handkerchief tree, acacia, blue cedar, Japanese walnut, dwarf cypress, plane, Sequoiadendron giganteum, false thorn of Christ, black walnut and tree of heaven (19th and 20th centuries). Noteworthy furthermore is a monumental magnolia (19th century) just west of the orangery, which possesses great decorative value on the east edge of the northern park meadow. On the left side of this meadow, from time immemorial a rhododendron planting. Furthermore, holly has been planted in various places in the wooded areas around the park meadows. Just north of the orangery, bordering the winding path, a still partly preserved roundel of 19th-century beeches, which can be interpreted as a signature of garden architect M.F. Weyhe. On Weyhe's design poplars are indicated instead of beeches. Originally these beeches surrounded a small round pond.
Around the time the park was laid out in landscape style, the kitchen garden was also established. The preserved structure of this walled layout is determined by a main axis, which extends from the heart of the front facade of the orangery to the gate. The cross axes along the front of the orangery and along the SE side of the greenhouses are also still present.
At the end of the 19th century, probably shortly after a terrace was built on the park side of the main wing, several neo-formal parterres were laid out to the north-west of this, which are now completely gone. At that time, a neo-formal parterre was also laid out on the SW side of the side wing. The rectangular course of the boundary of this former parterre as well as the straight path with lime trees to the south-west of it, which angles to the SE in the direction of the forecourt, still exist to this day. In the SE corner of the aforementioned former parterre a swimming pool of recent date, which is of minor significance for protection. According to family tradition, the Brussels architect Louis Fuchs (sr. or jr.?) was the designer of these parterres. At the beginning of this century, several plots were added to the park on the north side of the layout, which were afforested (now poplars). These plots are historically significant only as a green buffer.
