The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Detached former Third Trades School, designed by J. Duiker in 1930-1931 on a complex plan according to the ideas of Neue Sachlichkeit.

Description.

Technical school, formerly the Third Trades School, consisting of rectangular staggered building masses of three storeys, partly with basements, under flat roofs. According to the ideas of Neue Sachlichkeit the concept of the closed facade wall is broken through and a completely new architecture emerges with large glazed surfaces where interior and exterior space penetrate each other. The wall surfaces to be filled in are where necessary executed as closed up to heights that are functionally determined in relation to the activities behind the facade surface.

The load-bearing skeleton is of reinforced concrete. The facades consist amongst others of cavity walls. The outer leaf is cast-in-situ concrete and the inner leaf is of dressed stone. The skeleton and interior and exterior walls are stuccoed; the various materials, textures and joints are by means of this stucco layer made into a continuous skin. The plinth around the building is black and varies in height. Clarity and practical spatial organisation determine the interior with a centrally situated stairwell and continuous corridors with on either side perpendicular to them or parallel to them located classrooms. The toilet facilities are projected in almost every location by each room. The cloakroom and the bicycle shed are centrally located, which can be controlled from the porter's lodge.

The building has 21 classrooms; the classroom dimensions form the basis for the dimensional methodology (a column spacing of 8x8 metres) of the design. The dimensions are threefold: 8x8, 8x13 and 8x16 metres. The concrete skeleton makes it possible to place large glazed surfaces. The classrooms and other rooms receive their light via approximately 600 steel windows with horizontal glazing bars with narrow profiles and steel storefronts with glass on the corridor sides. The light access to the hall originally came about via large surfaces of glass bricks. These have since been replaced by steel windows.

The school building met very strongly the modern ideas about education and welfare of that time, which were strongly oriented towards health and hygiene. An open plan with large glazed surfaces where light and air can penetrate abundantly translate these ideals into architecture.

Valuation.

Of cultural-historical importance as a school building which in its conception expresses the modern ideas about education and welfare in the nineteen-thirties. Of architectural-historical importance as a representative and rare example of a school building in the style of Neue Sachlichkeit.
