Het Artillerie Schietkamp is een militair complex dat in korte tijd tussen 1877 en 1885 is aangelegd. De oorspronkelijke aanleg van het kamp is nog goed herkenbaar, mede doordat het ruimtelijk karakter sindsdien nauwelijks is gewijzigd. De opzet van het Bovenkamp was voor de tijd van aanleg zeer modern, daar de functies in losstaande paviljoens werden ondergebracht; het kamp vormt een onderdeel van de geschiedenis van het huisvesten van manschappen, mede als gevolg van de ontwikkelingen van het geschut. Vanwege de korte bouwperiode vertonen de bouwwerken onderling een zeer grote samenhang.
