Op de kop van de westelijke Amsterdamse havenpier "Steenen Hoofd" van het IJ gesitueerde GRAANSILO, gebouwd naar ontwerp van J.F. Klinkhamer en A.L. van Gendt in 1896-98 in opdracht van J. Ph. Korthals Altes (directeur van de N.V. Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Graansilo's en Pakhuizen), met bijbehorende elevatoren, afgetopte schoorsteen en voormalige ketelhuis en dienstwoning uitgevoerd in een eclectische trant. Rond 2000 is het monument herbestemd tot appartementen, bedrijfsruimtes, horeca en ateliers.
Het omvangrijke, grotendeels symmetrisch opgezette, bouwwerk is opgetrokken in baksteen met sokkel, door rondboogfriezen en lisenen afgesloten spaarvelden en attiek, en bevat in het midden het uit zes bouwlagen en kapverdieping onder leien tentdak bestaande reinigingsgebouw met ter weerszijden elk een twaalf traveeën tellende opslagvleugel onder zadeldak met lichtkap en dakkapellen, waarbij de twee traveeën aan de uiteinden telkens zijn teruggerooid onder mansardekap. Deze vleugels bevatten tesamen 120 gemetselde karen van vierkante grondvorm en een stelsel van ijzeren trekstangen, waarvan de rozet-ankers de spaarvelden in de grotendeels blinde gevels markeren. De parterre bevat een afwisselende reeks van getoogde achtruitsvenster - met roosterluiken en siermetselwerkvulling in de segmentbogen - en dienstingangen, waarvan de meeste oorspronkelijke houten deuren nog resteren. Voorts zijn bakstenen lijsten en reliëfs, arkeltorentjes en klimmende boogfriezen toegepast en in de kapverdieping, middentoren en bijgebouwen gevarieerde venstervormen met roedenverdeling.
Het reinigingsgebouw - waar in oorsprong de machinerie stond opgesteld en op de eerste verdieping aan de IJ-zijde een kantoor voor de silobaas was ingericht - bevat inwendig ijzeren kolommen die balkenvloeren steunen. Op de eerste verdieping zijn troggewelven en ijzeren binten aangebracht. Bij de ingang aan de stadszijde bevindt zich een gedenksteen blijkens inscriptie in 1897 gelegd door de opdrachtgever.
Op de oosthoek, aan de IJ-zijde, bevindt zich de achtzijdige, door kantelen bekroonde, lostoren met elevator. Op de noordhoek, aan de IJ-zijde, is het voormalige ketelhuis aangebouwd onder zadeldak met lichtkap.
Op de westhoek, tegen ketelhuis en opslagvleugel aan, is de dienstwoning gebouwd, met twee bouwlagen op L-vormige grondslag, waarbij de smalle lange vleugel wordt bekroond door een dwarse mansardekap met dakkapellen en de korte vleugel plat is afgedekt.
Graansilo-gebouw met bijbehorende onderdelen van algemeen belang uit oogpunt van zowel architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de sobere eclectische utiliteitsbouw van verzorgd gedetailleerde baksteenarchitectuur, als industrieel-archeologische waarde als tamelijk vroeg en zeldzaam geworden voorbeeld van een geheel in baksteen uitgevoerd silogebouw met elevatortoren alsook wegens de markante, historisch-functionele situering aan het IJ.

GRAIN SILO situated on the head of the western Amsterdam harbour pier "Steenen Hoofd" of the IJ, built according to designs by J.F. Klinkhamer and A.L. van Gendt in 1896-98 on commission of J. Ph. Korthals Altes (director of the N.V. Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Graansilo's en Pakhuizen), with associated elevators, topped-off chimney and former boiler house and service dwelling executed in an eclectic manner. Around 2000 the monument was converted to apartments, business premises, catering facilities and studios.
The extensive, largely symmetrically arranged, building is constructed in brick with plinth, enclosed by round-arch friezes and pilasters with spandrels and attic, and contains in the middle the cleaning building consisting of six storeys and attic storey under slate tent roof, with on either side respectively a storage wing counting twelve bays under gabled roof with skylight and roof dormers, whereby the two bays at the ends are each set back under mansard roof. These wings together contain 120 bricked grain bins of square ground form and a system of iron tie-rods, whose rosette anchors mark the spandrels in the largely blind facades. The ground floor contains an alternating sequence of arched setback windows - with grille shutters and decorative brickwork infill in the segment arches - and service entrances, most of whose original wooden doors still remain. Furthermore, brick mouldings and reliefs, miniature corner turrets and climbing arch friezes are applied and in the attic storey, central tower and outbuildings varied window forms with glazing bars.
The cleaning building - where originally the machinery was installed and on the first floor on the IJ side an office for the silo boss was fitted out - contains internally iron columns supporting beam floors. On the first floor are trough vaults and iron ties installed. At the entrance on the city side is a commemorative stone which, according to the inscription, was laid in 1897 by the client.
On the eastern corner, on the IJ side, is the octagonal, topped with crenellations, discharge tower with elevator. On the northern corner, on the IJ side, the former boiler house is built on under gabled roof with skylight.
On the western corner, against the boiler house and storage wing, is the service dwelling built, with two storeys on L-shaped ground plan, whereby the narrow long wing is crowned by a transverse mansard roof with roof dormers and the short wing is covered flat.
Grain silo building with associated components of general importance from the point of view of both architectural-historical value due to the austere eclectic utility building of carefully detailed brick architecture, and industrial-archaeological value as a fairly early and increasingly rare example of a silo building executed entirely in brick with elevator tower as well as due to the striking, historically-functional situation on the IJ.
