BALUSTRADE AND RETAINING WALL WITH ORNAMENTAL PIECES.

Red brick with marl stone blocks enlivened balustrade, which encloses the forecourt on the south side and which retains this court on this side towards the lower-lying orchard. The balustrade consists of two sections, which meet each other at the level of the start of the pergola in a quarter-circle arch. The eastern section of the balustrade adjoins the west wing of the outbuilding. The western section of the balustrade turns at right angles at the west end of the forecourt and continues to the main axis of the garden and park layout. The balustrade is articulated by thirteen monumental tapering rectangular brick piers with flat and rustic natural stone bands and rustic panels into bays. On the south and west sides the transition from the balustrade to retaining wall is marked by a marl stone cordon moulding. The balustrade is topped with arched sandstone handrails. The balustrade was probably erected in the 17th century and was enriched with various decorative details during the restoration of Kasteel Eijsden under the direction of the Liège architect E.M. Jamar in the years 1881-1886. Each pier is crowned by an 18th-century bust or ornamental piece.

On the eastern balustrade from east to west:
