Description
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
The historical garden and park layout of Kasteel Eijsden dates back to the first half of the 17th century, when Kasteel Eijsden and the farm building were constructed. Dating from the time of the castle's construction is the rectangular moat system surrounding it. Probably around this time, a section of the axis was also laid out, which runs from the Graaf de Geloeslaan via the gateway of the outbuilding to the bridge in front of the gateway of the south wing of the castle. This axis may well have extended to the Maas at that time, or this may have occurred in the 18th century. The western section of this axis is planted with linden trees on both sides. In the 18th century, the axis east of the Graaf de Geloeslaan was extended, with the lane taking on the function of a cross-axis. To terminate the main axis on this side, a roundel was created, from which two lanes running in a northwesterly and southwesterly direction were projected. As such, the roundel, now surrounded by red beeches (from c. 1935), together with the aforementioned section of the main axis (now planted on both sides with a single row of beeches from c. 1935) and the two lanes (now provided with young avenue plantings) form a 'patte d'oie', a classicist motif in garden art that was frequently applied in the Netherlands in the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century. On both sides of this section of the main axis is a meadow, now planted with standard fruit trees (partly dating from before the Second World War). The Graaf de Geloeslaan is now bordered on both sides by a low hawthorn hedge and is now planted on both sides with alternating planes and ash trees. On the west side of the Graaf de Geloeslaan, before the Second World War, a yew hedge was planted against the wall of the kitchen garden and orchard and of the courtyard to the southeast of the farm building, which conceals the walls on this side of the layout from view.
Also probably dating from the 18th century is the rectangular ground plan of the kitchen garden and orchard, in which several standard fruit trees (partly dating from before the Second World War) remain, surrounded on three sides by brick walls from the 18th and partly 19th centuries. On the west side the kitchen garden and orchard are bordered by a high yew hedge, which on the north side turns at right angles into a yew hedge pruned into a round-arched gateway. This hedge was planted at the beginning of this century, when the park underwent historicising changes. The path cross that divided the kitchen garden and orchard lay here from ancient times or was laid out in the 19th century.
In the years 1890-1904, shortly after the castle and part of the farm building were restored in historicising Maasland Renaissance style, a large section of the park was replanned by French garden architect Achille Duchêne. Part of the garden sculptures that embellish the layout to this day may form part of Duchêne's plan, but this is not certain. Of the marl stone sculptures on the balustrade and breast wall built in the years 1881-1886 to the south of the castle and of the sculpture group 'Les Roses' on the south side of the layout, it is known that these were placed later. At the end of the 19th century, Duchêne created the 180-metre-long 'Charmille', the present beech bower, which was projected at right angles to the main axis on the axis of the gateway of the south wing of the castle in a southerly direction. The two meadows on either side of the bower are planted with standard fruit trees (partly dating from before the Second World War). On the forecourt, the three rectangular parterres and the rectangular border along the south wall of the orchard and kitchen garden were laid out, which still exist in simplified form. The piece de resistance of this section of the layout is the monumental pool area with fountain, which was created on the axis of the gateway of the south wing of the castle. To the north of the castle, a parterre with box hedges and flower beds was laid out. Of these parterres, only four spherical box hedges, which marked the corners of this parterre, have been preserved.
Duchêne's layout is characterised by a combination of formal elements and a landscape-style layout, which at this time in the Netherlands and in France was referred to by the term 'style mixte'. On the north side of the kitchen garden and orchard and to the north and west of the castle, a landscape-style park was created, which harmoniously connects to the formal park section. North of the kitchen garden and orchard, a path in broad curves runs through a park woodland (now mixed deciduous trees) along the NE, north and NW side of the layout and along the Maas on the west side of the castle and connects to the main axis of the layout on the SW side. The uneven winding woodland on the NE side may partly be of older date. In the NW corner of this woodland is located in a hillside area the ice house, probably dating from before 1800. Also some solitary specimens (plane tree) in the meadow to the north of the castle are probably older than Duchêne's layout and suggest that there was already a landscape-style park at Eijsden before his work (the castle has a design drawing for a landscape-style layout of Kasteel Eijsden from 1821 by C.H. Petersen, the extent to which it was executed is not known). Some other solitary specimens in the meadow to the northwest and west of the castle (weeping beech, cedar, linden, acacia) were probably planted in the time of Duchêne.
Around 1860, an aqueduct over De Voer was built to the west of the former sawmill, which is located on the south side of the layout, over which water from a branch of De Voer laid out at that time at the former sawmill was led. With this water, which flows via a ditch along the east edge of the 'Charmille', the water level of the castle moat could be better regulated. At that time, the banks of De Voer directly north of the former sawmill were probably also lined with large stones, and the narrow winding path bordered with deciduous and coniferous trees to the former sawmill was also laid out. This area, located to the southeast of the bower, forms its own separate scene apart from the park layout designed by Duchêne.
