Omschrijving

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The house De Parckelaer is surrounded by a park in landscape style, whose origins date back to the first half of the 19th century. Shortly after 1808, when the house was presumably provided with Empire windows, the then formally designed park (of which no traces have been preserved) was probably redesigned in landscape style. With regard to structure and layout, this park has been largely preserved. For the composition of the layout, the position of the house and the views, which are possible from the house into the park and beyond, played a major role. Around the house the terrain was somewhat excavated, so that the house came to lie on a slope, which gradually descends all around and which gives the house an imposing appearance when viewed from the park. Also to the north, west and east the terrain was provided with slopes, which lend dynamism to the various views in the park. Along the north boundary of the park tree allées were planted (beech, oak, plane, walnut, swamp cypress), so that from the north side of the house and during a walk around the site, fine views of the meadows located north of the layout were created. An important feature in the park layout is a walking path, which runs along the boundaries of the central park area and which links the views around and in the park in a flowing manner. North of the house the walking path is sunken and is not visible from the north side of the house; as such it was laid out at this location as a 'ha-ha'. On the north side of the park the path leads in an easterly direction past several groups of trees (chestnut, beech, acacia and poplar) and leads to an eye-shaped pond. To the east of this lies a winding copse (mixed deciduous wood), of which the path network still partially exists and which has traditionally screened the park on this side from the country estate Kruisvoorde. From the circular drive on the south side of the house the path leads to the west side of the park, where a water feature in landscape style is situated. Between the drive and this water feature is a solitary beech and a bank planting of rhododendrons, ornamental shrubs and mixed deciduous wood. Directly on the east side of the house, coniferous trees (Western redcedar, yew, Lawson cypress, swamp cypress) were planted at the beginning of this century, which make the view from the house on this side in an easterly direction impossible. Utility gardens were probably situated east of this tree group. Some hedges and fruit trees on the site point to this. The unclear spatial structure of the south-eastern part of the park might also be explained by this. During the course of the 20th century the park was enriched with various ornamental trees and shrubs. These plantings appear to have been made rather arbitrarily without taking account of the existing spatial structure of the park, and are of secondary importance to the historic layout.
