Inleiding
SYNAGOGE, gebouwd in 1854 in neo-classicistisch- eclectische trant ter vervanging van een oudere voorgangster. Links van het sterk teruggerooide gebouw ligt de omstreeks de eeuwwisseling gebouwde rabbinaatswoning in Moorse trant (mon.nr 434387). De voormalige kosterswoning annex school en slachthuis rechts van de synagoge, is wegens te sterke wijzigingen niet van rijkswege beschermd. Tot omstreeks de jaren zestig werd het voorterrein van de synagoge afgezet door een eenvoudig 19de-eeuws smeedijzeren hek.
Omstreeks 1900 telde de Joodse gemeenschap van Winschoten nog bijna 850 zielen en in 1940 nog een kleine 500. Toen na de Tweede Wereldoorlog de Joodse gemeenschap van Winschoten nagenoeg was uitgeroeid, werd besloten de synagoge te verkopen aan de Gereformeerde Kerk artikel 31, die het gebouw tot eind 1994 in gebruik heeft gehad.
Ondanks de wijzigingen die met name in het interieur hebben plaatsgevonden om dit geschikt te maken voor de Gereformeerde eredienst en het ontbreken van de kenmerkende synagogale inrichting (onder meer de vrouwengalerij werd afgebroken), is dit markant vormgegeven gebouw als belangrijke herinnering aan de voormalige bloeiende Joodse gemeenschap van Winschoten van zeer groot historisch belang.
Omschrijving
Voormalige syngagoge, gebouwd in 1854 in neo- classicistisch-eclectische trant met als opvallend architectonisch element een imposante pilastergevel. Monumentaal zaalgebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond, opgetrokken uit rode Groniger baksteen op gepleisterde plint en gedekt door een met pannen belegd schilddak op rondhouten sporen op onderslagen; houten lijstgoot. De voorgevel wordt geleed door een middenrisaliet bestaande uit vier kolossale pilasters die het fronton met rondboogvenster dragen. Omlijste ingang met fronton; stoep. Alle gevels hebben twee rijen halfrondgesloten lage vensters; de vensters in achter- en zijgevels worden van elkaar gescheiden door gemetselde pilasters.
Het INTERIEUR wordt overdekt door een tonvormig gewelf met eenvoudig lijstwerk, bestaande uit een frameconstructie van houten schenkels waarop een bepleisterde rietbekleding is aangebracht. Introduction
SYNAGOGUE, built in 1854 in neo-classicist-eclectic style to replace an older predecessor. To the left of the distinctly set-back building lies the rabbi's residence built around the turn of the century in Moorish style (mon.no 434387). The former caretaker's residence adjoining school and slaughterhouse to the right of the synagogue was not protected by the state due to excessive alterations. Until around the 1960s the synagogue forecourt was enclosed by a simple 19th-century wrought iron fence.
Around 1900 the Jewish community of Winschoten still numbered almost 850 souls and in 1940 still a small 500. When after the Second World War the Jewish community of Winschoten was virtually wiped out, it was decided to sell the synagogue to the Reformed Church article 31, which used the building until the end of 1994.
Despite the alterations which took place particularly in the interior to make it suitable for Reformed worship and the absence of the characteristic synagogal furnishings (among other things the women's gallery was demolished), this distinctly designed building is of very great historical importance as an important reminder of the former flourishing Jewish community of Winschoten.

Former synagogue, built in 1854 in neo-classicist-eclectic style with as striking architectural element an imposing pilaster facade. Monumental hall building on rectangular floor plan, constructed of red Groningen brick on plastered plinth and covered by a hipped roof tiled with pans on round timber trusses on underslung; wooden list gutter. The front facade is articulated by a central projection consisting of four colossal pilasters supporting the gable with round-arched window. Framed entrance with gable; step. All facades have two rows of half-circular closed low windows; the windows in rear and side facades are separated from each other by masonry pilasters.
The INTERIOR is covered by a barrel vault with simple moulding, consisting of a frame construction of wooden struts on which a plastered reed covering is applied.
