The register's description

Waardering

Built in Amsterdam School style COUNTRY HOUSE (1920), designed by P. Vorkink and Jac.Ph.Wormser (1918-1919), erected in brick on a striking ground plan, whose principal outlines show undulating lines. It has two elongated, asymmetrical wings, connected at an obtuse angle with the somewhat oval central section, which is raised with a wooden roof storey, while the right wing contains a gateway-shaped passage in the middle. The whole is covered with undulating thatched roofs, in which the chimneys form a marking point of each of the three sections. On front and rear sides rhythmically coupled windows, mostly with horizontal glazing bars - on the upper floor on the garden side also with diagonal division - and with moulded framing in Amsterdam School style from the construction period. Entrance section with mortared step and decorated panelled door from the construction period. Internally in the main room a layered ceiling with fitted woodwork executed in Amsterdam School style - skirting boards, mouldings and high wainscoting - with ring-shaped block decorations, and a wrought iron fireplace in the same style; on the terrace side five stained-glass fanlights built in, bevelled at the bottom. In the corridors black-yellow floor tiles laid in broken meander pattern and blue/red tile wainscoting. Country house, in ground plan, elevation and interior characteristic of the building method of the Amsterdam School of special value from an artistic and architectural-historical point of view.
Wooden entrance gate between unequal, mortared cylindrical piers, likewise in Amsterdam School style, with the name "'t Reigersnest.
Associated gardener's cottage built in comparable style to the main house (1920) on a more or less oval basis; erected in brick with slightly overhanging wooden roof storey on the front, under undulating thatched roof, crowned by an ornate mortared chimney with a zinc capping in the form of a curling wave. Windows in the same style as the main house.
Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT OF MILDENBURG AND 'T REIGERSNEST. The historic garden and park layout of Mildenburg and 't Reigersnest originally formed a single park layout, the layout at the historic country estate Mildenburg. The division through the sale of the country estate in 1919 led to renewal of the northern half of the layout into the park layout at the country house 't Reigersnest built in 1920. The boundary line between both parks is determined in the field by the imposing main axis planted with double oak belonging to Mildenburg, which runs from the site of the former country house Mildenburg in a westerly direction as far as the dunes and was terminated in the 20th century by a hill with a belvedere. The present park layout of Mildenburg dates back to the first half of the 18th century and was developed after Baron Diederik van Leijden had the country house Mildenburg erected around 1725 (demolished in 1947). It is known that Van Leijden and his son Helenus Willem significantly extended the territory of the country estate. In 1736 the grounds that now belong to the park of 't Reigersnest came into the family's possession. A map of the layout from 1785 gives a detailed picture of the park, the layout indicated on the map has remained largely recognisable in structure to this day. Recognisable is the open courtyard on the west side which is closed off on the east side by a double row of lime trees, behind which the main axis extends. Furthermore, some transverse lanes (oak) from this period (1785) and the characteristic infill of wooded compartments with flower beds between the lanes are still recognisable. Also the oak lane running in curves - one of the few elements in landscape style on the map from 1785 - which springs from the main axis at the west corner of 't Reigersnest and which runs in the direction of the main building 't Reigersnest, as well as some other early landscape lanes and dance fragments on Mildenburg and 't Reigersnest, have been preserved. The pergola in the park of 't Reigersnest, currently consisting of a continuous lime avenue, also appears on the map from 1785. The map further indicates by means of a circular planting along the Zwartelaan the foundation and remains of the octagonal medieval lighthouse, which at that time probably stood arranged in the park as a romantic ruinous ornamental object. The ruin was overgrown over time and excavated again in 1964. The map further shows at the SW corner of the site a variant of a star wood with lanes and wooded compartments, which proves to be a copy of the labyrinth at Versailles according to an illustration by Ch. Perrault from 1679. Several lane sections of this star wood have been preserved in the park. The south side of this lane system was sacrificed around 1900 to the urban expansion of Oostvoorne and is still partially recognisable in the street pattern. Between 1814, when the country estate is sold to the Lette family following a public auction, and 1832 (Cadastral Minute Plan), further landscaping of the park took place. The Mildenburg courtyard received its present drop-shaped structure, in the present park of 't Reigersnest a kidney-shaped pond with adjacent sloping viewpoint hill was laid out, the forest of the present Mildenburg was enriched by a pattern of winding paths and winding lanes and at the boundary between layout and dunes the outer belt was planted with beeches: all these elements have been preserved in the park of Mildenburg and 't Reigersnest. Also the sloping terrain surface of the walk around the kidney-shaped pond dates from this period. With the construction of the new country house, a new park was laid out in a very restrained manner on the terrain of 't Reigersnest, which covers the entire area north of the main axis of the park of Mildenburg and whereby the then existing layout was spared as much as possible. With this new layout around the country house, some open spaces were created for the layout of ornamental meadows with border planting and winding sand paths and for the layout of a circular drive. Furthermore, a number of ornamental trees were planted at strategic points, including a Chinese dawn redwood, water and marsh cypress, copper beech, horse chestnut and hickory. In keeping with the fashion of that time, in which the original landscape could become part of the layout, the dune landscape was also incorporated into the layout: on a dune top also rose in Amsterdam School style, designed by P. Vorkink and Jac. Ph. Wormser, a dune pavilion, which was accessible via winding paths in the dune landscape (pavilion was demolished by the occupier during the Second World War). The basis of this new garden and park layout at 't Reigersnest came about from a collaboration between the architects of the country house Wormser and Vorkink and the then owner of 't Reigersnest.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT OF MILDENBURG AND 'T REIGERSNEST is of general cultural-historical importance

- because of the large scale and age of the park with recognisable layout from the 18th century and first half of the 19th century in formal and landscape style

- because of the integrity of the landscape style layout with border gardens from the 1920s around the country house.

Description

FOUNDATION AND REMAINS OF LIGHTHOUSE ALONG ZWARTELAAN. In 1964 (again) excavated foundation and remains of wall of an octagonal approximately 30 metre high lighthouse covered with a pointed roof with slate. On a detailed map of the country estate Mildenburg from 1785 the remains are indicated by means of circular planting along the Zwartelaan. The remains probably formed part of the early landscape park as a romantic ruinous ornamental object at that location and became overgrown over time. The remains have an external diameter of 12 metres, the construction width of the walls is approximately 2 metres. The masonry of the former tower gives the impression that the tower was rebuilt on the old foundation with secondarily processed material. Under the foundation on the south side a dwelling layer which runs under the masonry and where potsherds were found from the period 1275-1350 (ball-shaped pot, leached stoneware, stoneware covered with purple slip with wheel-stamp decoration, pottery from Andenne and from Zeelandic Flanders). Research shows that it concerns the foundation and remains of a lighthouse demolished in 1551, which was built around 1350 on the site of a wooden predecessor erected in 1280.

Valuation

The FOUNDATION AND REMAINS OF LIGHTHOUSE ALONG ZWARTELAAN in the park layout of 't Reigersnest is of general cultural-historical importance

- because of the high rarity value

- because of the ornamental value as a romantic ornamental object in the park of 't Reigersnest
