The register's description

SEA FORTIFICATIONS, located along the bank of the Westerschelde against the Boulevard de Ruyter, between the Westbeer (at the level of the Coosje Buskenstraat) and the Keizersbolwerk (separate national monument number). The SEA FORTIFICATIONS consist of the originally fifteenth- and sixteenth-century, but repeatedly renewed and restored sea defence fortification walls which were built against the fourteenth-century Westdijk. In the walls are bastions from both the sixteenth and seventeenth century, including the Gasthuisbastion, the Gevangenhuisbolwerk (or bastion) and the Bastion de Leugenaar. The Westbeer is a stone defensive structure with monk chamber and underground passages located in the sea fortifications, dating from the French Period (1811-1813). A major alteration of the sea fortifications took place in 1890-1891, when the walls were raised by two metres during the construction of the Boulevard de Ruyter and provided with a half-hipped profile. They thereby became part of a walking boulevard due to the emerging tourism. In the Second World War the sea fortifications formed part of the Vlissingen sea front (Atlantikwall). As a result of Delta Works the banks of the Westerschelde were raised in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. The walls came partly to lie under the new sea defences. In 1980-1981 a major restoration of the sea fortifications took place. The parts of the sea fortifications located to the east of the Keizersbolwerk have separate national monument numbers.
