Omschrijving
De "Oostbeer": een z.g. STENEN BEER met escarp en contrescarp, die eertijds diende ter afsluiting van een vestinggracht van de Westerschelde. De Beer is in de Napoleontische tijd door de Franse Genie ontworpen en werd in 1811-1813 gebouwd. De Beer is een enige meters brede, 30 meter lange, gemetselde en met een gemetselde ezelsrug afgedekte muur met een hoofdgalerij, die aan de grachtzijde is voorzien van schietgaten voor geweervuur en met daarop aansluitend de escarp- en contrescarpgalerij. Een deel van het zeventiende-eeuws bastion is hier behouden. Begin eenentwintiste eeuw is de monnik op de beer gereconstrueerd, de oorspronkelijke natuurstenen bedekking ('muts') is ter plaatse behouden. De Oostbeer maakte samen met de Westbeer deel uit van de Vlissingse zeeversterkingen, waarvan delen onder separate monumentnummers zijn beschermd.

Description
The "Oostbeer": a so-called STONE BEAVER with escarp and counterscarp, which formerly served to close off a fortification ditch of the Westerschelde. The Beaver was designed by the French Engineering Corps in the Napoleonic period and was built in 1811-1813. The Beaver is a brick-laid wall several metres wide, 30 metres long, covered with a brick saw-tooth ridge, with a main gallery, which on the ditch side is provided with loopholes for rifle fire and adjoining the escarp and counterscarp gallery. A part of the seventeenth-century bastion is preserved here. In the early twenty-first century the ridge was reconstructed on the beaver, the original natural stone covering ('cap') has been retained in place. The Oostbeer together with the Westbeer formed part of the Vlissingen sea fortifications, of which parts are protected under separate monument numbers.
