Description

Characteristic COLONY DWELLING of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (founded 1818), laid out in the first half of the 19th century, but adapted over time to modern requirements, including provision of a covered link. Such a dwelling originally comprised a simple residential section at the front and barn, threshing floor and stable at the rear, separated from each other by bedrooms. The residential section was built of brick and provided with some window and door openings, usually fitted with glazing bars; the business section was constructed of wooden posts, clad with tarred boards. The roof was covered with straw or reed. The oldest type (1819 onwards) had a chimney at the division between residential and business sections; the somewhat later type had a chimney with flue against the front façade, while the rear section could also be provided with a flue.
