Omschrijving
De "Kruitmolen"; in 1820 als buskruitmolen gebouwde WATERMOLEN op de Geul, die tot 1851 als zodanig gefunctioneerd heeft; na grotendeels afgebroken en herbouwd te zijn van 1875 tot 1885 als papiermolen, onderdeel van een papierfabriek in gebruik; sedert 1887 in gebruik als onderdeel van een BIERBROUWERIJ (sedert 1921 Bierbrouwerij "De Leeuw"). De middenslagmolen heeft een waterrad - het grootste van Nederland - met ijzeren as, ijzeren spaken en houten schoepen; het waterrad levert door middel van riemoverbrengingen de drijfkracht voor koelcompressoren en hulpwerktuigen van de brouwerij. Het waterrad met een lossluis en twee maalsluizen, de overbrenging en de aangedreven machinerieen zijn ondergebracht in drie aaneengebouwde, hoofdzakelijk uit omstreeks 1900 daterende (witgepleisterde/geschilderde) gebouwen. Buiten de gebouwen, op de andere tak van de Geul een ijzeren hefstuwsluis ten behoeve van het creeren van voldoende verval om de molen te kunnen laten functioneren. Goed, gaaf en voor Nederland thans uniek voorbeeld van een nog functionerende industrie-watermolen.

Description
The "Kruitmolen"; in 1820 built as a gunpowder mill WATER MILL on the Geul, which functioned as such until 1851; after being largely demolished and rebuilt from 1875 to 1885 as a paper mill, in use as part of a paper factory; since 1887 in use as part of a BREWERY (since 1921 Brewery "De Leeuw"). The central-stroke mill has a water wheel - the largest in the Netherlands - with iron shaft, iron spokes and wooden buckets; the water wheel provides through belt drives the driving force for cooling compressors and auxiliary equipment of the brewery. The water wheel with a sluice gate and two mill sluices, the transmission and the driven machinery are housed in three adjoining, principally dating from around 1900 (whitewashed/painted) buildings. Outside the buildings, on the other branch of the Geul an iron lifting weir sluice for the purpose of creating sufficient head to allow the mill to function. Good, well-preserved and for the Netherlands now unique example of a still functioning industrial water mill.
