Description

Three-aisled pseudo-basilica with three-sided projecting choir under a slate-covered gabled roof and with tower at the entrance, built 1903-04 to the design of A.H.L. Kups (1896) on the site of an older church. Constructed in brick in a late variant of eclecticism; the facades provided with buttresses and round-arched windows with brick tracery and tooth friezes below the moulded cornices. The entrance tower contains three storeys and a spire tapering to an octagonal form; two entrances at the side. Internally the entirely whitewashed church space is divided by two rows of four cast-iron "Italic" columns (fa. G. Wisselwey & Co., Zwolle) on octagonal plinths. The central nave is covered by a barrel vault, the lower side aisles have per bay a flat ceiling, separated by round arches, which rest on the columns and on pilasters against the side walls. Wooden pew plan and organ (moved to the gallery) from the period of construction. The church furthermore contains: a hexagonal oak pulpit (17th century), with arched panels separated by Ionic pilasters, carved friezes and arch spandrils; a carved reading desk (17th century) with cherub head; a copper baptismal crown with swan (18th century); three copper crowns (17th century); copper baptismal crown with swan (18th century); three copper crowns (17th century); copper double candlestick (17th century); two models of herring barrels (one of which called D'KAARS).
