Stadhuis. Gebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond aan de voet van de kerktoren. Baksteenarchitectuur met Bentheimerstenen sierdelen. Het bouwwerk wordt gedekt door een zadeldak tussen puntgevels. Gebouwd door Emond Hellenraet 1634'-40, verbouwd 1741 en ingrijpend gerestaureerd 1898-1900. De smalle gevels hebben hoofdgestellen, kruisvensters onder geprofileerde ontlastingsbogen met schelpvullingen en, in de noordgevel, een rijk versierd poortje (1634), bekroond door het stadswapen, geflankeerd door obelisken. De toppen van deze zijgevels zijn bij de restauratie gemaakt; oorspronkelijk had het gebouw een schilddak en lagere topgevels met balustraden. De, uit 1741 daterende, oostgevel heeft een zandstenen middenrisaliet met deur- en vensteromlijsting in Lod. XIV-trant en een gebogen fronton met stadswapen. Deur en bovenlicht het 1814. Description
Town Hall. Building on rectangular ground plan at the foot of the church tower. Brick architecture with Bentheim stone ornamental parts. The structure is covered by a gabled roof between pointed gables. Built by Emond Hellenraet 1634-40, rebuilt 1741 and extensively restored 1898-1900. The narrow facades have main posts, cross windows under moulded relieving arches with shell fillings and, in the north facade, a richly decorated doorway (1634), crowned by the town coat of arms, flanked by obelisks. The tops of these side gables were made in the restoration; originally the building had a hipped roof and lower gable tops with balustrades. The east facade, dating from 1741, has a sandstone central risalit with door and window frames in Louis XIV manner and a curved pediment with town coat of arms. Door and fanlight from 1814. In this front facade arched windows, wall anchors and carved consoles under the cornice. The western gable still has a 17th century character, with the proviso that the main post under the roof eave dates from the restoration. Chimney stacks built onto the roof. Interior; keystones (17th century) and in the council chamber a chimneypiece (mid 18th century).
