Omschrijving
Post- en Telegraafkantoor, gebouwd in 1902-1904, naar ontwerp van rijksbouwmeester C.H. Peters in diens zeer persoonlijke mengstijl.
Omvangrijk onderkelderd gebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond, rustend op deels natuurstenen sokkel, opgetrokken in neogotische- en neorenaissance vormen uit rood-bruine friese "drielingsteen" en gedekt door met leien belegde zadeldaken, met vorstkammen van kruisbloemen, tegen trapgevels.
Verlevendiging der muurvlakken door onder meer hardstenen cordonlijsten en dorpels, speklagen en omlijstingen; verglaasde profielsteen voor rollagen onder dorpels en profiellijsten boven kozijnen; gewone profielsteen voor omlijsting en traceringen; Bentheimer zandsteen voor afdekkings- en aanzetstukken, versieringen, balustrades, rondboogfriezen en beeldhouwwerk; dakgoten en klossen van hardsteen; gietijzeren sierankers.
De voorgevel bestaande uit twee hoekrisalieten met trapgevel en door balustrade afgezet middengedeelte; regelmatig asymmetrische indeling door dubbele terugliggende ingang, waarboven het opschrift POST EN TELEGRAAFKANTOOR, rondboogvensters op begane grond en verdieping en spitsboogvensters in de trapgevels en dakkapellen op zolderhoogte.
Inwendig de voormalige wachtzaal, overspannen door een op de late-Engelse-gotiek geïnspireerde a jour bewerkte ziende bekapping.
In de achtergevel van het postkantoor is een zeventiende-eeuws poortje opgenomen, zichtbaar aan de Galileeër Kerkstraat.

Post and Telegraph Office, built in 1902-1904, designed by royal architect C.H. Peters in his very personal mixed style.
Extensive basement building on rectangular floor plan, resting on partly natural stone base, erected in neogothic and neorenaissance forms in red-brown Frisian "threestone" and covered by slate-laid gabled roofs, with frost ridges of cross-flowers, against stepped gables.
Enlivening of the wall surfaces by, among others, hardstone string courses and lintels, ashlar courses and framings; glazed profile stone for roll courses under lintels and profile cornices above window frames; ordinary profile stone for framing and traceries; Bentheim sandstone for capping and setting pieces, ornaments, balustrades, round-arch friezes and sculpture; roof gutters and blocks of hardstone; cast iron ornamental wall anchors.
The front facade consisting of two corner risalits with stepped gable and central section marked off by balustrade; regular asymmetrical division by double recessed entrance, above which the inscription POST EN TELEGRAAFKANTOOR, round-arch windows on ground floor and first storey and pointed-arch windows in the stepped gables and roof dormers at attic level.
Internally the former waiting room, spanned by a roof covering inspired by late English gothic worked à jour.
In the rear facade of the post office is a seventeenth-century small gateway incorporated, visible from the Galileeër Kerkstraat.
