BEGRAAFPLAATS met POORTGEBOUW uit 1885, deel uitmakend van het voormalige terrein van het Huis Hengelo. Het is een der oudste begraafplaatsen van Nederland. De oudste grafsteen is gedateerd 1625. Funderingsresten van de kerk behorende bij het huis van Hengelo bevinden zich tussen de graven. Langs de Bornsestraat een poortgebouw met woning uit ca 1885 in neo renaissancistische stijl. Aan weerszijden van het gebouw is een bakstenen muurtje gemetseld met een hardstenen rand, waarop een smeedijzeren hek. Het poortgebouw is opgetrokken in rode baksteen op een rechthoekige plattegrond over een bouwlaag onder een zadelkap met antracietgrijze Tuile du Nord dakpannen. De poort bevindt zich in het midden van de symmetrische voorgevel(noordzijde), aan weerszijden bevinden zich een vensteras en een hoekrisaliet met entree onder de steekkap. De voorgevel is voorzien van gepleisterde speklagen, sluitstenen en lisenen op de hoeken van de risalieten. De poort is geplaatst onder een rondboog waarboven een fries met triglyfen, een fronton en een met koper gedekte koepel. Op de koepel een vierkante dakruiter met koperen spits. Gietstalen klok van Bochumer Verein, 1903, diam. 42 cm. In het fronton een zandstenen plaquette met cartouches en het opschrift: 'Algemene Begraafplaats'. De rondboog boven de poort is voorzien van witgeverfde sierstenen met diamantkoppen, evenals de pilasters, waarop het fronton steunt. In de onderdoorgang zijn een getoogde enkele en een dubbele deur geplaatst. De entrees in de risalieten hebben bovenlichten met glas-in-lood onder hanekammen. In de geveltoppen zandstenen driehoeken met respectievelijk een doodshoofd en het wapen van Hengelo. Tussen de poort en de risalieten bevinden zich twee vensters met kruiskozijnen onder hanekammen, waarboven in het dakvlak twee kleine dakkapellen met spitsen. In de zijgevels verschillende formaten rechtgesloten vensters onder hanekammen en segmentbogen. In de achtergevel (zuidzijde) drie rechtgesloten vensters en een deur onder segmentbogen en een dakkapel. De begraafplaats is van belang wegens de relatie met het voormalig huis Hengelo en de ouderdom van enkele grafstenen, alsmede het poortgebouw.

CEMETERY with GATE BUILDING from 1885, forming part of the former grounds of Huis Hengelo. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Netherlands. The oldest gravestone is dated 1625. Foundation remains of the church belonging to Huis Hengelo lie between the graves. Along the Bornsestraat a gate building with residence from circa 1885 in neo-Renaissance style. On either side of the building a brick wall has been laid with a hard stone edge, upon which an iron fence. The gate building is built in red brick on a rectangular ground plan over one storey under a saddle roof with anthracite-grey Tuile du Nord roof tiles. The gate is situated in the middle of the symmetrical front facade (north side), on either side is a window section and a corner risalit with entrance under a flat roof. The front facade is provided with rendered brick courses, voussoirs and lisenes at the corners of the risalits. The gate is placed under a round arch above which is a frieze with triglyphs, a pediment and a copper-covered dome. On the dome a square roof tower with copper spire. Cast-iron bell by Bochumer Verein, 1903, diam. 42 cm. In the pediment a sandstone plaque with cartouches and the inscription: 'Algemene Begraafplaats'. The round arch above the gate is provided with whitewashed ornamental stones with diamond heads, as are the pilasters on which the pediment rests. In the passage a single arched and a double door have been placed. The entrances in the risalits have fanlights with leaded glass under mouldings. In the gable ends sandstone triangles with respectively a skull and the coat of arms of Hengelo. Between the gate and the risalits are two windows with cross windows under mouldings, above which in the roof plane two small roof dormers with spires. In the side facades various sizes of straight-topped windows under mouldings and segmental arches. In the rear facade (south side) three straight-topped windows and a door under segmental arches and a roof dormer. The cemetery is of importance due to its relationship with the former Huis Hengelo and the age of some gravestones, as well as the gate building.
