Omschrijving
Tonnaer, in neo-gotische trant 1903. Mechanisch torenuurwerk, A. Vos & Zonen, 1901, later voorzien van elektrische opwinding.

Description
Neo-gothic cruciform basilica with two different entrance towers and roof turret, built in 1877-'82 after design from 1874 by E.J. Margry to replace an older Public Works church, with extended on the side of the Oude Langendijk the sacristy with storey under gabled roof and stair turret under pyramidal spire beside, and catechism room with storey under gabled roof. The two entrance towers - one of which has an openwork square lantern and the other an octagonal one - contain 4 bell cloaks, from 1883 by the firm Petit and Fritse and are each crowned by an octagonal spire; the nave and transept are under slate gabled roofs, the side aisles under slate lean-to roofs - supported by flying buttresses - built in brick. Above the entrance a St. Antonius image and an enthroned Christ. The church contains internally natural stone columns with colonnettes provided with gilded, sculptured capitals, wooden pointed barrel vaults with two-light openings and with rosette-decorated ribs, supported by dragons; mortared cross-rib vaults in side aisles and priest's choir and polychromy as well as painting dedicated to enthroned Christ on the triumphal arch from the construction period, likewise after design by E.J. Margry. In the raised, five-sided closed priest's choir is the high altar from 1886, which like the other altars - a Mary, a Joseph altar in the three-sided closed side chapels a Sacred Heart and St. Antonius altar in the transept arms (all from 1883-'84) and the holy statues of Peter, Paul, Francis of Assisi, Nicolaas Pieck (all from 1885) and the Stations of the Cross executed in polychrome oak wood from (1885) as well as the mission cross at the entrance (1886), was manufactured by the firm de Poel and Stoltefus, as were the communion rails - with onyx table stones and copper framework with relief plates depicting the first Easter meal in Egypt and the Last Supper and furthermore leaf ornament decoration. On the organ gallery above the entrance an organ case in neo-gothic style. Within it an organ with Great Manual, Positive, Recitative and free Pedal, made in 1893 by M. Maarschalkerweerd. In 1929 the mechanical action was replaced by a pneumatic tracker system. In the east transept arm the altar piece painted on canvas - Adoration of the Shepherds - after design by Ant. v. IJsendijck from 1837, coming from the previous church. The marble pulpit with curved sounding board is provided with relief representations concerning Francis and a painting of an enthroned Christ after design by J.H. Tonnaer, in neo-gothic style 1903. Also the stained glass windows in the transept and the rose window and the windows above the entrance portal were executed after his design, between 1886 and 1901. The wall paintings of saints incorporated in the triforium date from 1903. The marble baptismal font with copper lid, placed in the east niche, from 1907. The inventory further includes the oak church benches, confessionals, font cabinet and sacristy cabinet in neo-gothic style from the construction period. Roman Catholic Church building with interior and outbuildings of Catholic character, with for its time typical, especially on early French Gothic examples inspired neo-gothic style; characteristic of this is the application of a basilical main form, with transept and two entrance towers (in this case deliberately executed unequal) and roof turret, furthermore of flying buttresses, buttresses, moulded entrance portals, corner turrets, pointed arch and rose windows with natural stone tracery, and internally the use of clustered columns and cross-rib vaults and biforia (here executed as blind recesses); besides, the indigenous Romano-gothic was also taken as an example as appears from the many decorative mortar bonds of the spandrels; characteristic of the neo-gothic interior is further the polychromy of the columns, walls and vaults, whereby it is remarkable that here dragons are applied as supporting elements instead of as gargoyles, and further the arrangement with polychromed altars, pulpit with sounding board, and holy statues in gothicizing forms with much gilding, and the richly sculptured oak wooden furnishings of church benches, confessionals and cabinets, with much variety of gothicizing details. Mechanical tower clock, A. Vos & Zonen, 1901, later provided with electric winding.
