Description

The Town Hall. Originally a medieval building of which the vaulted cellar is preserved and the layout into a main floor, 2 m above the street, a floor above and an attic with high roof truss, in their present form from circa 1536-1560. The front facade which in its 16th century form was crowned by hanging towers on the corners and between them a crenellated parapet, is, after rebuilding in 1687-1688, in 1768-1769 replaced by a new front facade according to a design by Philips Willem Schonck with sculptural work by Guilliam Carrier; hard stone central bay with sculpted coats of arms of Holland and Geertruidenberg above the floor window, and a balcony with wrought iron railing with the date 1769. Hard stone cornice and attic with statue of Justitia. Hard stone window surrounds and stoop with wrought iron handrail. On the roof a small bell tower, originally 16th century, renewed in 1772 and 1879, with a bell. Interior: council chamber with ceiling, mantelpiece and four-square from the time of the late 18th century rebuilding. In the council chamber still a painting from 1685, depicting Lady Justitia and a view of the city, by Aart van Tongeren; fifteen elm chairs, delivered in 1767 by Johannes Schaffers, an oak table made in 1767 by the carpenter Jan Spruyt.
