Omschrijving
Het Stadhuis. Een omvangrijk bouwwerk, bestaande uit een rechthoekig door schilddak (met leien) gedekt voorgedeelte met brede representatieve gevel aan het Grote Kerkhof, alsmede een naar achter diep in de Polstraat uitgebouwde vleugel en een daarachter gelegen lager part met aan de Polstraat een door Filips Vingboons (1662) ontworpen pilastergevel van 14 vensterassen. De in 1692 door Jacob Roman ontworpen voorgevel heeft een risalerende middenpartij en zijlisenen alsmede een attiek met een gebeeldhouwd middenstuk en hoekvazen. Voor de risaliet een stoepbordes en een door pijlers en kolommen gedragen balkon. In de gevelvlakken ter weerszijden van de middenpartij ondiepe balkons voor de middenvensters van de bovenverdieping. Inwendig: het uit de samenvoeging van twee middeleeuwse bouwwerken ontstane complex bevat een aantal rijke interieurs uit XVII-XIX, te weten: vestibule met stucplafond (1693/94) schouw (XVIId-XVIIIb/c) stucversiering aan weerszijden van de schouw (XVIIId) en rijk gesneden houten omvatting van twee naast elkander gelegen deuren (1665); trouwzaal met twee versierde plafonds (1695); raadzaal met gesneden vleugeldeur en stucplafond (1805), rijk versierde achterbetimmering (XVIIc) van beide burgemeesterszetels, waarboven een XVIIIb uurwerk; tegenover de deur van de raadzaal een dubbele poort, afkomstig uit het huis Assenstraat 20, de burgemeesterskamer heeft een schouw met gesneden eikehouten boezem, gedragen door ionische zuilen en een wand, bedekt met eikehouten kastenbetimmering.

The Town Hall. An extensive building, consisting of a rectangular front section covered with a hipped roof (with slates) with a broad representative facade on the Grote Kerkhof, as well as a wing built deep backwards into the Polstraat and a lower section behind it with a pilaster facade of 14 window bays on the Polstraat designed by Filips Vingboons (1662). The front facade designed in 1692 by Jacob Roman has a projecting central section and side pilasters as well as an attic with a sculpted central piece and corner vases.
