The Department's description

Blocky, modern style fire station of c.1960, situated on the NW side of the Portaferry Road, to the SE side of Newtownards town centre.

The building is roughly square in plan, (largely) brick built, and mainly flat roofed. It is two storeys in height but taller to the SE front than to the NE and the rear (because the ground floor of the front section houses the high ceilinged fire engine hall). The (PVC) glazed entrance screen is set within a bay to the left side at the SE front. The first floor of the bay is also largely (PVC) glazed and to the right of this bay are three sets of large timber and glazed folding doors for the exit of the fire engines. Above these the facade is rendered and there are four fixed light square windows.

The NE and SW facades are largely plain with modern windows of varying size (with PVC frames). There is a fire escape to the SW facade. To the rear there is a projecting, single storey, lean to section which has been extended at some point. The section to the right of this is two storey and both sections have PVC windows of various size.

Slight overhang to most sections of roof. Brick chimney stack to taller section to front

This fire station appears to have been built in c.1960.
