Exterior description and setting

Two storey former farm house with gabled roof and large recent extension to rear. The house is set on the N side of the Belfast Road, with its S gable to the Road and the N gable facing into the street to the N (the former road from Holywood).

Front W facade is formal and has central ‘Ards’ doorway with semicircular arch head with keystone, plain pilasters and sheeted timber door with fanlight. Window to right of door now with modern timber frame with glazing bars, made to resemble original sash. Similar window to left with three to first floor.

N gable has a small modern timber window (much the Same style as front) to the right on the first floor. This gable merges into N facade of large two storey extension which dominates the entire rear of the house.

The S gable has a small window (similar in general style to front) to the right on the first floor. All faces of the part two, part one and a half storey, extension have modern timber windows of varying size, some quite large.

The entire facade is finished in plain render and painted. The main (original) roof is gabled, with that to the extension mainly hipped. All sections of the roofs have asbestos free slates. The roof of the rear extension has two gabled dormers with modern windows. PVC rw goods. Two rendered chimney stacks.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1858-60, which probably corresponds with the original section of the house we see today. On the earlier OS map of 1833/4, buildings are shown to the rear of this site only, buildings which may correspond to the gabled house standing to the W of this house, but which has also been modernised recently. The extension to the rear of this house was added c.1990.

Plain two storey house of c.1840-50 with symetrical front façade with ‘Ards’ doorway. The building has been greatly extended at the rear and recently renovated throughout.
