The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Site of former free standing chimney stack, on the side of the Crawfordsburn Road on the N edge of Newtownards. Demolished c.1975 as part of housing development on site.
Description from 1st Survey card " Chimney stack some 40 ft high, free standing in field alongside main roadway. Square on plan with battered walls of Scrabo stone, with corbelled cornice and blocking course. About 6 ft square at base."
Historical information
This chimney does not appear to be indicated on the OS Map of 1834 or the revised map of c.1860, however, it was described in the original survey of October 1972 as being square in plan, battered and built of Scrabo stone, all of which could suggest an early nineteenth century structure. What the chimney was associated with also remains a mystery, though the presence of a former corn mill complex on the opposite side of the Crawfordsburn Road may have had some connection with it.
