Exterior description and setting

Small ‘two’ storey gabled house with the N gable set right on the side of the Movilla Road, c.2 miles E of Newtownards.

Front (W) facade has a slightly right of centre doorway with ‘Ards’ surround consisting of pilasters with projecting ‘blocks’ and semicircular archivolt with keystone. The doorway contains a PVC glazed door and plain fanlight. To the left and right of the doorway is a single window with modern PVC frame and narrow plain render surround. Directly above the doorway is a similar upper level window set within a gabled half dormer.

The S gable has two similar windows to the first floor and one to the left on the ground floor. The left side of the S gable flows into the side of a single storey lean to extension/projection with contains a glazed PVC door.

The N gable has two windows as before to the first floor, one to the right on the ground floor and one to the N side of the lean to. The ground floor of the rear is completely taken up with the single storey lean to extension/projection, which has a PVC ‘casement’ window to the right.

The entire facade is covered in a dry dash ‘salt & pepper’ render, with a plain rendered recessed base.

The main roof is pitched with asbestos free slates to both it and the lean to. Two red brick chimney stacks to each gable. PVC rw goods

Historical information

According to the present owner, this house dates from c.1928 and was built to replace an earlier dwelling which appears on the OS map of c.1860. The ‘Ards’ doorway was salvaged from the original house. The reception room to the south once served as the ‘kitchen’.
