Exterior description and setting

Site, at the corner of Shore Street and Union Street, formerly occupied by a part single, part two storey house of possible pre 1834 construction, demolished c.1980 with new dwellings built in place.

The house formerly on the site is described in the first survey of January 1978 as: ‘Single and two storey house. Roofs hipped and slated, chimneys rendered. Walls rendered and painted white. Windows drop hung (no astragals) and recent casements. Doors recent and panelled. Flat pediment on lintel of some openings. Condition fair. Front about 30ft’.

Historical information

This site is shown occupied on the town plan of c.1771-90 and the OS map of 1834. The valuation returns of c.1838 (which, unusually, do not record building dimensions), tell us that the property in place at that stage was occupied by a James Lyons and had the relatively high rateable value of £6-6-0. It is possible, given the vernacular form of the building described above, that it was substantially the same house recorded in the 1830s, but this is in no way certain.

Unfortunately the town plan to accompany the second valuation of c.1861-3 is missing, so it is not certain who held the property at that date. The house remained occupied until at least early 1978, but was demolished in c.1980 and new dwellings built in its place in 1981.
