Exterior description and setting

Relatively simple obelisk war memorial of c.1922 with small paved forecourt with quadrant walls and railings. The memorial is set on the E side of Shore Street with its back to the shore.

The memorial is in dressed grey stone limestone. Its focus is the obelisk which stands to the E side with the small forecourt to the immediate W, walls stretching from the base of the obelisk to N and S and low railings enclosing the ensemble to the W.

The obelisk itself has a shallow pyramidal cap with a recessed band just below this. Just below again, to the W face, is a small moulded wreath. Below this the W face is inscribed. To the base of the obelisk the square pedestal with various courses above and below. The W face of the pedestal is inscribed and from the N and S faces extend the L-shaped quadrant walls. The walls are tallest where they meet the pedestal with these taller sections topped with simple (somewhat fascis-like) classical moulding and curved end buttresses. The taller sections also have panels to their W faces with the inscribed names of the fallen thereon. The lower outer sections of the walling have simple coping terminate with simple end piers with shallow pyramidal caps and curved buttresses (to their inner faces).

The rear of the walls (which face the shore) are painted and rise from a sturdy battered base constructed from dark, squared fieldstone.
The iron railings to the front of the small forecourt are of same height as the outer portions of the walls and have simple geometric panels. They include a small, central, gate.

Historical information

This war memorial, originally erected in memory of the fallen of the First World War, may date from c.1922.
