Exterior description and setting

Single storey vernacular house of possible pre 1834 construction, now with modern window frames and asbestos slates to roof. The property is set to the N side of Cotton Road, roughly 1.5 miles W of Donaghadee.

The front façade faces roughly S and is asymmetrical. To the left of centre is a relatively recent, partly glazed door. To the left of this are two windows with modern frames. To the right of the door are three unevenly spaced windows with similar frames. Both gables are blank.

To the right of centre at the rear is a relatively small lean-to with a timber sheeted door and window (with modern frame) to its N face. To the W face there is a tiny (fixed light) four pane window. To the left of the lean-to (to rear façade of main building) are three unevenly spaced windows, as front.

The entire façade is finished in painted lined render. The gabled roof is covered in asbestos slates (as is the lean-to roof), with red clay ridge tiles and cream clay parapets. Three unevenly spaced cream brick chimney stacks with cornice course. Cast iron rw goods.

Historical information

A building, matching the size and shape of the present dwelling is shown on the OS map of 1834, but unfortunately not recorded in the valuation of c.1836 (it was under rateable value). In the valuation of c.1861-3 the occupant is recorded as one John Alexander. The present owner’s family acquired the property in 1934 from a Mr Hugh Forster.
