Exterior description and setting

Relatively plain one and a half storey gabled farm house of 1864-65 with large two storey return. The property is set at the end of a long lane to the N of Newtownards Road, roughly one and a half miles W of Donaghadee.

The symmetrical front façade faces S. To the centre is the entrance which consists of a glazed and panelled door with Doric column jambs and a decorated lintel which is recessed directly above the door itself. Above this is a plain glazed elliptical fanlight with moulded architrave. To the left of the doorway is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars and margin panes (6 panes over 6). To the right of the entrance is a similar window.

To the W gable there are two upper level windows with modern (sash-like) frames. The E gable has a window to left on the ground floor, as front. To the right is a slightly smaller sash window with Georgian panes (6 over 6), with two windows to the first floor as W gable.

To the right of centre of the rear elevation is a large two storey return. To the gable of the return are two square first floor windows with modern frames. To the first floor of the E face of the return there is a large window to left with modern frame. To the ground floor there is a small single storey lean-to, (set in the intersection of the return and the main house), with a window with modern frame to its E face and a timber sheeted door to its N face. To the right on the ground floor of the main return there is a window with modern frame. To the W face of the return there is a window to the ground floor and one to the first floor, both of which correspond to those on the E face. To the ground floor far right on the rear façade of the main house there is a modern glazed door.

The façade is finished in unpainted lined render. The gabled roof is slated with corrugated iron to the lean-to. The roof to the main section of the house has an overhang and plain barges. Three rendered chimney stacks, to main gables. Mainly cast iron rw goods.

Garden to front of house with rendered wall to W with wrought iron gate. Two and single storey gabled outbuildings to W and S, mainly constructed in rendered brick.

Historical information

The present owner (2001) states that this house was built in 1864-65 by an ancestor. It replaced an earlier dwelling which was situated further to the west.

Relatively plain one and a half storey gabled farm house of 1864-65 with large two storey return. Some of the windows to the return appear either to be modern insertions or have been enlarged in relatively recent times, and these and many others to the rear now have modern frames.
