Exterior description and setting

Recently renovated and extended single storey gabled house on the N side of the Drumfad Road, c.2 miles S of Millisle.

Front S facade has recent large-ish left of centre gabled porch, with timber sheeted door, with multi pane sidelights, and windows to E and W faces. Behind this is the entrance door to the house. This porch is post 1973 and is not the original entrance. Three modern windows to right of porch and two to left, all with small-ish ‘Georgian’-like panes. The window second from left is a recent opening as the original second from left window was where the porch/door now is. The window to the immediate right of the porch was the original entrance. The windows all have somewhat decorative, but sturdy looking, security bars in front of them.

The W gable is blank.

The rear is dominated by a large recent flat roofed extension with modern windows and door. Attached to the E face of the extension is an ‘open porch’ covering the yard.

The main house is finished in rough cast render.

The roof is pitched and covered in Bangor blue slates, with three rendered chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.

Though much of the front facade of this house appears largely untouched the porch is entirely modern and the window and door arrangement has been altered recently.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60, but does not appear to be indicated on the Dunbar estate map of 1797. This house was probably built in the early nineteenth century. Recently the building has witnessed changes to the window and door arrangement at the front and a large extension has been added to the rear.

Evaluation

Single storey house of probable early nineteenth century origin which has witnessed significant changes in recent times. The front porch is modern and the window/door arrangement on the front facade has been altered and a new window inserted. There is also a large flat roofed extension at the rear.
