Exterior description and setting

Plain two storey terrace house of perhaps c.1865 on the SE side of Main Street, Greyabbey.

The front facade is finished in lined render with the rear in rough cast. The main roof is gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates and two yellow brick chimneys. Cast iron rw goods.

The front (NW) elevation is asymmetrical with a slightly right of centre modern panelled and glazed door with plain fanlight. To the left are two sash windows with Georgian panes, with one to the right and four (evenly spaced) to the first floor.

To the right on the rear is a central full height flat roofed return with modern (c.1930s) windows. To the left of this is a single storey lean to extension with modern glazed door to the right and sash window to the left. Directly above the lean to (on the main house) are two modern windows (c.1930s), with that to the right filled with a landscape scene in stained glass. To the right of the full height extension (at the far right on the main house), is a sash window to the ground floor (as front) and a modern two pane window to the first floor.

To the rear yard of this house are some small single storey outbuildings which now have Bangor blue slated gabled roofs and various modern windows.

Historical information

The OS maps of 1834 and c.1860 show a smaller building roughly on the site of No.11a and party on the site of No.11, so it is likely that Nos.11 and 13 are post 1860 in date. The owner of No.11 stated that he believed his house dated from c.1865 (and also probably No.13). He also stated that the outbuildings to the rear may have been used as small a slaughterhouse at some stage and mentioned the presence of what he termed a ‘trivet’, a type of gutter for allowing blood to drain away from the animal carcasses. No.11a was the village post office until recently.
