The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Pair of plain double-fronted two storey terrace houses of perhaps c.1840s, one largely modernised in recent times, the other still retaining most of its original windows and external features. The pair is set on the NW side of Main Street, Greyabbey.
The gabled roof of No.44 is covered with concrete tiles to No.44 with Bangor blue slates to No.46. Three concrete brick chimney stacks. PVC rw goods to both houses.
The front (SE) elevation of both houses share a similar (almost symmetrical) arrangement with a central doorway with a single window to either side, on the ground floor, and three evenly spaced windows on the first floor. Both now have modern glazed doors and No.44 (to the SW) has two pane PVC windows and is finished in limestone chip render. No.46 is finished in lined render with chamfered quoins and still has sash windows with Georgian panes (6/6).
The exposed gables of both houses are blank and rendered. Outline of now demolished single storey building to NE gable of No.46.
To the rear of No.44 there are three modern windows of various sizes to the first floor and two large modern windows, on either side of a plain timber sheeted door, to the ground floor. No.46 has two small sash windows, with Georgian panes, to the first floor and two to the right on the ground floor. To the centre of the ground floor there is a plain timber sheeted door, with a small modern two pane window to the left. The rears of both houses are finished in rough cast render.
Large outbuilding to rear of both dwellings. Substantial sections of rubble wall dividing yards at rear.
Historical information
On the OS map of 1834, there appears to be nothing on the site of No.44 and the end of a long terrace where No.46 now stands. Both houses may date from c.1840s. Could the outline of the former single storey building on the NE gable of the terrace suggest that No.46, may once have started off life as a single storey dwelling also?
