Exterior description and setting
Single storey vernacular dwelling of pre1834 construction, set within the (largely two storey) terrace on the south side of Main Street, Ballywalter.
The gabled roof has a steep pitch and is covered with Bangor blue slates with a Velux window to the rear. The house is finished in plain render. Cast iron rw goods.
The front (W) elevation is symmetrical and has a central timber stable door with a sash window to either side.
To the left hand side of the rear there is a flat roofed extension / porch with large corrugated transparent PVC section. There is a small modern style timber window to the right on the rear of the main house.
Historical information
A terrace is shown on the this site on the OS map of 1834. In 1837 the Ordnance Survey Memoirs Ballywalter was described as having ‘cottages all built of stone, and, with few exceptions, but 1 storey in height...many of them slated...plastered and whitewashed’. This terrace was probably mainly one storey and perhaps No.5 alone is pre 1834, with rest of the properties probably constructed in later nineteenth century.
