The Department's description

Exterior description and setting

Small picturesque sandstone bridge of c.1850 by Charles Lanyon spanning a stream to the rear (west side) of the mansion at Ballywalter Park. This bridge is situated roughly 340m west of the mansion and is badly overgrown.

The bridge has a segmental arch c.1.5m wide with vermiculated voussoirs and projecting, plain keystones. There are sturdy panelled end piers and a cornice runs from the piers over the crown of the arch. The balustrade forms the parapet and has decorative balusters between the end piers and a smaller centre pier. Inner and outer faces of central piers have shell motif. End piers have blocking stones above cornice.

Historical information

This bridge was designed by Charles Lanyon and was probably constructed c.1850 at the same time as Lanyon’s extending and remodelling of the main house for the estate’s new owner, Andrew Mulholland. When first surveyed in 1971, it was recorded that this bridge had been 'repaired' with brickwork to the east side, however, these 'repairs' are no longer visible due to the greenery.
