Exterior description and setting

Terraced block consisting of six largely uniform and relatively small two storey roughcast houses, now mainly modernised with introduction of PVC windows partly glazed doors and concrete pantiles. The terrace is set on the north west side of Main Street, Greyabbey.

The symmetrical arrangement of the front elevation of each house is similar with a central doorway encased in a largely plain painted stone surround, with a window to either side and two directly above on the first floor. No.118-120 (at the NE end of the terrace and originally two properties), however, now makes use of the entrance on left of its NE gable (which used be used solely for the former No.120) and No.112 has had its arrangement altered recently so that the entrance is to the right with a broad (modern) window opening to the left.

The doors of all the houses are modern glazed type, except those to Nos.116 and 118-120 which are timber panelled. Each house now has modern windows, many PVC, mostly made to simulate the original windows and having ‘Georgian’ panes (or in the case of PVC, simulated ‘Georgian’ panes). Plain narrow surrounds to all front facade windows, bar the ground floor window to No.112.

At the rear of each house there are mainly modern windows and many of the window openings appear to have been altered. There are small extensions at the rears of Nos.110 and 112.

All houses are finished in roughcast render. The entire terrace has a pitched roof with red concrete pantiles and brick chimney stacks. No.114 has a flat roofed dormer to the rear. Cast iron rw goods.

Historical information

Though a terrace is shown on this site on the OS Map of 1834, these houses appear to date from the later nineteenth century.
