Exterior description and setting

Double fronted two storey gabled house of c.1880s-90s with canted bays, large two storey return and recent dry dash. The property is set on the NW side of Main Street, Greyabbey, near the junction with North Street.

Eaves course to main house and return. Front facade, gables of main house and NE facade and gable of return finished in limestone chip dry dash render with smooth cement render to edges of walls and smooth cement bands to gables. Rest of house finished in lined render.

All roofs are gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates and rendered parapets. Two yellow brick chimney stacks to main house and one to gable of return. Cast iron gutters and down spouts.

The front SE elevation is symmetrical with a central doorway with timber panelled door and segmental arch fanlight, all encased with pilasters with floral caps, frieze lintel and cornice. Steps to front doorway, low rendered wall to front.

To either side of the doorway is a three sided, one storey, flat roofed bay with segmental arch head window openings, with plain sash windows, to each side. The bays have moulded eaves. The first floor has five similar, but smaller, windows, with timber frames made to simulate the sash variety. The two outermost windows at each side are paired and there is a smooth render cill band linking all first floor windows.

The SW and NE gables are blank.

Large two storey gabled return to the rear with mixture of modern and original windows and a modern glazed door to the right on the return gable. Large single storey lean to extension in intersection of SW side of return and main house.

Historical information

This house is late Victorian, dating from c.1880s-90s. It was built on the site of a former terrace (probably of single storey dwellings) which is shown on the 1834 OS map.
