Exterior description and setting

Single storey gabled church with later gabled porch attached to front, situated at the cross roads at the centre of the small village of Glastry.

Front NW gable has central gabled porch with central window with semi-circular arch head and horizontal and vertical astragals. Slim cill to window. Two timber church notice boards on either side of window, with timber letters spell out ‘GLASTRY METHODIST CHURCH’ above window. Glazed double doors on left side of porch, right side blank. Main gable has broken pediment with small semi-circular arch ‘niche’ with cill. Gable and porch both have chamfered quoins.

NE side of main church has three tall sliding sash and windows with horizontal and vertical astragals and semi-circular arch heads, with similar arrangement to SW side. Some window panes have patterned and coloured glass.

Off centre gabled extension to rear gable, with steel eight pane window to SW side of extension and timber panel and glazed door to right on NE side. Small lean to projection attached to gable of extension with plain timber sheeted doors to SW and NE and a small two pane window to rear.

Main roof and extension roofs pitched with Bangor blue slates to main church and asbestos slates to extensions. Stone parapets to main roof. Facade finished in line render and painted. PVC gutters and down spouts.

Low red brick wall to front and NE of church.

Historical information

A date plaque above the original entrance (and now within porch) reads ‘Wesleyan Church A.D. 1848’, 1848 being the year of the building’s construction. The porch and rear extensions are obviously later.

The writers were informed by the present minister that a there is a publication concerning this church held by the Linenhall Library in Belfast, however, whilst such a publication undoubtedly exists, it could not be found when the writers visited the library (Sept. 1997).

Evaluation

Simple, single storey Methodist church of the 1840s with later porch and rear extension. The interior is plain with an acoustic tiled ceiling.
