Exterior description and setting

Two storey farmhouse with large single and two storey ‘T’ shaped extension to the SW, situated on the Manse Road on the outskirts of the tiny village of Glastry.

Front (NW) elevation of main house has timber and glazed door, with moulded quoins surround and keystone, to right. Two 2-pane PVC windows to left of door with three similar windows to first floor.

Extension to SW is single storey to NW and SE but is two storey to rear and has central entrance with PVC door, fanlight and sidelights, with large PVC windows to either side, all to SE elevation.

NW elevation consists of vertical stroke of ‘T’ shape (attached to gable of main house), which has single two pane PVC window (as main house), with the blank gable of the horizontal’ stroke of ‘T’ shape to the right of this.

Rear of main house has mixture of PVC windows and a PVC glazed door with extension two storey at rear, and with two large PVC windows to vertical ‘stroke’ of ‘T’. Small lean to store, for boiler, to rear of extension.

NW, NE, and SW facades of main house and extension finished in lined render with moulded chamfered quoins. Rear finished in limestone chip render with smooth cement base.

Main house has gabled and pitched roof with Bangor blue slates and two brick chimney stacks. Roof of vertical stroke of ‘T’ is pitched with Bangor blue slates to NE side but flat to rear, with a Bangor blue slate hipped roof to horizontal stroke of ‘T’.
PVC gutters and down spouts.

Large farm buildings to rear, with traces of now demolished farm buildings to NE.

Historical information

This house is shown on the 1834 OS map, much as today except that the extension does not appear to project to the NW, thus making the plan ‘L’ shaped rather than ‘T’ shaped. Photographs of the house taken in 1971 show the extension with a decorated doorway as well as much narrower windows with horizontal and vertical astragals, suggesting that this section of that the house may have been given its present form around c.1840-50. This suggestion is supported by the fact that the revised OS Map of 1860 shows the plan the same as at present. The present owner believes the extension was constructed to provide living space for relatives of a former owner, who had returned from abroad.

Evaluation

Large, plain, two storey farmhouse with single storey extension and PVC windows and modern doors. This building may be pre 1834 with the more formal single storey extension added c.1850s but more recent alterations have resulted in a building which is no longer of listable quality.
