Exterior description and setting

Two storey gabled terraced grouping consisting of a public house to the left (Nos.44-46) and a dwelling to the right (No.48) set on the NE side of Main Street within the village of Kircubbin.

To the far left of the ground floor of Nos.44-46 is the pub ‘shop front’ with multi paned curved slightly ‘projecting’ timber windows on either side of a timber door with decorative fanlight and (now boarded) former sidelight. Rendered stall risers to windows. Pub ‘shop front’ encased with pilasters and console brackets which support a wooden sign with slightly raised gold painted letters. To the right of the ‘shop front’ are timber sheeted double doors, with wicket door, set within a large segmental arch coach opening. To the right of this (to No.48) is a large modern six pane window with top hung central opening. To the right is the entrance to No.48 consisting of a plain timber door with semicircular fanlight with key stone, all framed with pilasters whose console brackets and the key stone support a cornice. To the right of this is a sashed window with moulded surround with distinctive fluted frieze and cornice over. The first floor of the entire grouping has seven windows as ground floor far right, all resting on cill course. Facade finished in lined render with chamfered quoins and plinth.

Exposed gables rendered.

Roof pitched with asbestos free slates and three corbelled yellow brick chimney stacks with matching pots. Cast iron RW goods.

Historical information

Buildings are shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, which could, conceivably, correspond to some extent with those we see today. A photograph of these properties dating from c.1910 shows that the pub front at No.44 is virtually the same as now, but that a house door way adjoining this front to the right [?the entrance to No.46] has since been obliterated by the widening of an alleyway to the rear to create the present large coach arch. Furthermore, what appears to have been a small shop front [?No.46] to the left of the entrance of No.48 has since been replaced by a large modern window. The decorative surrounds to the ground floor window to the far right and to those on the first floor, are probably late Victorian.

Evaluation

Two storey terrace block of possible mid 19th century origin, consisting of a pub and house. Some windows and door openings have been altered but the traditional pub front has survived.
