Exterior description and setting

Two storey terrace with a public house and restaurant with apartments above, at the northern end of Main Street, Kircubbin.

Front NE facade of No.49 has a timber panelled door to the far right with plain semicircular arch fanlight and plain moulded surround. Two pane PVC window to left of door with simulated lattice pattern leaded lights, with timber restaurant sign above. Large elliptical arch coach doorway to left of window, with timber sheeted double door. Rubble dressings of coach doorway still visible with plain narrow moulding around dressings. Entire first floor of terrace is part of No.49 and has five two pane PVC windows as ground floor No.49, with ‘cill’ course and ‘louvered’ timber window shutters. No.49 has rendered chimney stack to NW

No.49 has large full height gabled return to rear.

No.51 has a central timber panelled door with semicircular arched fanlight with exposed rubble dressings and plain narrow moulded surround. Small traditional projecting pub sign above doorway. Large fixed light acid-etched pub windows to each side of door with one to right larger and with timber pub sign above. No.51 has a ‘double pitched' roof with brick chimney stack to rear section.

Large three level section to the rear with a small single storey lean to extension.

Entire face of terrace finished in pebbledash with chamfered plinth and smooth rendered course to eaves. Mixture of modern timber windows to rear of entire terrace, with rough cast to entire fear facade. Roof of main section of terrace finished in red clay tiles to front, with Bangor blues to rear. PVC gutters and down spouts.

Historical information

Buildings are shown on this site on the OS Map of 1834, but there is a significant gap shown in what appears to be the middle of the present terrace, suggesting that this structure was, in part at least, built after this date.

Evaluation

Much altered section of two storey terrace, now contianing a public house with apartments over, dating perhaps to the mid to latter half of the nineteenth century. Now having a much modernised façade with limestone chip render and PVC windows. The rear has been greatly extended and the roof is now covered in pan tiles. The interior layout appears to have been radically altered.
