Exterior description and setting

Substantial one and a half storey house of possible pre 1834 origin, recently completely renovated and extended and now to all intents and purposes a modern dwelling, having had a large porch, oriel and bay added, and PVC window frames, doors and ‘Thru-tone’ slates installed. The property is set to the E of the Ballyquintin Road, c.3 miles SE of Portaferry.

The original front facade of the house was that facing W, but the building is now entered via the E facade. This facade itself is asymmetrical and has a large off centre gabled porch with PVC glazed door and large sidelights with moulded chamfered quoins and simulated flat arch with keystone. Porch sides both have single two pane windows. Porch has pitched roof with ‘Thru-tone’ slates, clay ridge tiles, PVC ogee gutters and square down spouts.

Two storey projecting gable to far left of porch with two pane window to both ground and first floor. Between projecting gable and porch is a two pane window to the ground floor and a smaller two pane window, near eaves, to first floor. To right of porch is broad three pane window to ground floor and a large gabled oriel/half dormer window to first floor.

The W facade has off centre glazed door with fluted surround and moulded keystone, with two two pane windows to the left and one to the right. Directly above door is window with semi-circular arch head with moulded (in render) sail boat design above, all set within a steeply pitched gable.

N gable has door to right on ground floor and two small windows to first floor. [This gable used to have adjacent attached glass house and single storey brick building until recently.]

S gable has two two pane windows to ground floor and two similar, but slightly smaller, windows to first floor.

The facade is finished in unpainted rough cast with chamfered plinth and in/out quoins to all elevations.

Main roof has ‘Thru-tone’ slates, clay ridge tiles, PVC ogee gutters and square down spouts. Small Velux window in roof to east elevation. Two red brick chimney stacks with one pot each.

Substantial out houses to N and E.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834 and all other maps thereafter. The present house may contain the fabric of that shown on the 1834 map but recent renovation has meant that to all intents and purposes, the building we see today is modern.
