The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Demolished and the site remains vacant, except for one front boundary pier.
It was described in the first survey in 1972 as "A single-storey, three bay lodge with rendered walls and hipped slated roof with modern brick chimney. The front glazed entrance door is flanked either side by two-light margin-paned casement windows. Treillage from widely overhanging eaves. Hipped lean-to accommodation at rear.
Historical information
Built as a gate lodge for Fir Grove (HB20/08/053), a house positioned to the south-west, on the other side of the railway line. Precise date of lodge not known but it appears on the OS map of 1857; demolished in 1990s. Fir Grove was reputedly of late 18th century date with mid-19th century, and later, additions; delisted in 1994.
