Exterior description and setting

Large three storey sea front house of c.1900, set at the end of a terrace on the E side of Downs Road.

The front façade is symmetrical to the centre on the ground floor are double timber panelled doors. The doorway has a fanlight with shallow segmental arch head with label moulding over. Above the doorway is a small first floor balcony, which has decorative cast iron balustrading and is supported on two narrow cast iron columns.

The porch spans across part of three storey,with hipped roof and canted outer bays. At each floor the bays have a window to each face with slightly splayed reveals, each with shallow segmental arch head cill course and label moulding over. Between the bays at first floor level there is a doorway, as ground floor but with glazed upper panels to the double doors. There is a window between the bays at second floor level (as bays). All the windows have sash frames. The front façade is finished in lined render (fairly prominently chanelled to the outer edges), and painted. Yellow brick eaves course.

The blank S gable is finished in lined render and painted.

The rear façade is dominated by a large two and a half storey gabled return. To the N face of this there is a ground floor window and one to the first floor, both with sash frames. The S face has two windows to the ground floor and two to the first floor, one to each floor with a sash frame, the others modern insertions with modern frames. The return gable has a large single storey lean-to with large modern windows, a Velux window and a glazed door. Above this lean-to at first floor level, are two sash windows, the one to the centre being quite large. There is another sash window to the upper level of the gable, with a semicircular arched head. The exposed sections of the main rear façade, at both extreme left and extreme right, each have a window to each floor. The rear is finished in plain render and unpainted.

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with hounds tooth red clay ridge tiles. Cast iron skylight to rear of roof. Two yellow brick chimney stacks to main roof. Non-natural slates to lean-to. Mixture of cast iron and PVC rw goods.
