Exterior description and setting

Part single, part two storey gabled house of probable mid 19th century construction, possibly built as the residence for a steward employed by the Roden Estate. The building is set on the NW side of the Mill Road, roughly a mile S of the small village of Kilcoo, c.4.5 miles NE of Hilltown.

The front façade faces SE and is asymmetrical. To the left is the two storey section which has a gabled front. Set slightly back from this to the right is the single storey section. The latter section has a partly glazed entrance door with a sash window to left and right (vertical glazing bars- 2 panes over 2). The two storey section has a similar window to either floor.

The SW façade (which is two storey). Has a window to the left on the ground floor with modern metal frame (this window may be a later insertion). To the left his façade merges with a high wall [?or an extension] which spans the gap between the house and a neighbouring two storey outbuilding. There is a timber sheeted door to this wall. To the right of the SW façade is abutted by a small gabled shed.

The NE (single storey) gable of the house appears to be blank. No access to rear.

The façade is rendered and unpainted. To the S corner the façade is covered in plant growth. The roof is covered in natural slate with a rendered chimney stack to the NE gable and another (taller) which rises from the intersection of the one and two storey sections. Cast iron rw goods.

The neighbouring two storey outbuilding is rubble built and has an elliptical arched vehicle doorway to front (SE), flanked by pedestrian doors. There is a loft doorway to the first floor. To the SW gable is a single storey section with single doorway. All the doors are timber sheeted. The front façade of the whole outbuilding group is harled and white washed. The gable roofs of both sections are covered in natural slate.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1859, which probably corresponds with the house we see today. Ann Alexander Halliday is listed as the occupant in the valuation returns of 1863, with the house rated at £5-10-0. The design of this property matches that of a house close by which was built as the residence for a steward working on the Roden Estate. It appears likely that this building may originally have fulfilled a similar role.
